How does your game fit the theme?
The game is set a day before a battle, you are a spirit who needs to awaken soldiers so that they can meet their fate on the battlefield. I mainly focused on the Calm part, since the storm is never shown, only assumed.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
YES

I liked the visuals and gameplay was pretty fun, but I feel like the controls could use a touch-up.

Loveddd this game! I'm a big fan of rage games, and yours gives me Jump King and Getting Over It vibes. The graphics are really neat too, with great lighting. Maybe avoid having the player waiting around for the bar to refill by making the bar refill when touching the ground. Overall, congrats!

Fantastic platformer :D fits the theme very loosely, but it was really fun! I also love the art. that walking animation on the bird is the goofiest thing i've ever seen and i love it

really cool take on platforming, it was challenging and a lotta fun. nice game :D

Took me 326 seconds! Easy 5 stars on innovation; I've never played a platformer before where I was controlling an owl! I loved the music and the super unique concept. I think a nice quality of life feature to add would be to have the jump bar refill upon landing. That way, the player can't jump infinitely but they also don't need to wait for the bar to refill every time they fail on a section and land back on the floor. Other than that, amazing game!

Took me 900 seconds to get through it, but overall I got through it...
Not a fan of rage games(jump king), but overall I enjoyed it.
Really like how you used the tileset from the beginning which has normal Map and dithering at the lighting
The picture and the melody gives a very peaceful dark atmosphere, that has helped me deal with my falls
Great game!

This is quite similar to what I made, both challenging 2d pixel platformers with heavy emphasis being placed on a specific unique mechanic, in your case it being the limited flight. We even both put a "your time" at the end! I got 339 seconds.

Speaking of the limited flight, I've always thought that games where the player is a bird should allow the player to fly but find a way to balance it. In your case you did that well with an energy meter.

I really enjoyed playing it, it's got that atmosphere element that I only partially achieved. The graphics and audio are very nice and you hit the other categories for 4 stars from me. I would have put 5 in game design but I reached the end having only lit 3 campfires. I saw the fourth but assumed the path I was going was going to take me back to the fourth guy.  Instead it just took me to the endscreen and I won.

I really want this to reach 20 votes so that it can place since you need 20, I've already voted yousr so I can't do it again but I encourage you to play some more games by other people since that encourages more people to vote your own game. I'm also encouraging a few others in the Brackeys discord.

biggest, huge disclaimer of all time: i suck at platformers. very bad.

But I gave it a shot. Several shots, in fact. I was determined to not give up. I mean, look at it! It’s such a gorgeous game! (kinda found the text on the intro screen the only thing I’d say that looks out of place).

But I kept on bouncing on the walls. I thought that you could do wall jumps like on other platformers, and kept on pressing left/right-up and I kept on bouncing and sliding. I felt like I was on a pinball table going boing and boing all over the place.

I was stuck at the first screen for like, and I kid you not, at least 20 minutes trying to jump. Then I started building muscle memory. Kinda knew where to stand to jump and not land in the middle of a wall and bump into the bottom again. Then I got into the second screen, and spent a bit less but kept getting stuck because of the bouncyness. I kept on miscalculating the precision of the jump and angle per button press I needed. And, after that, I just figured out it was not the game for me.

But I’ll be real honest and fair: I am not a hardcore platformer gamer to be able to really enjoy your game. I loved the whole vibe, and _I absolutely adore that kind of very-low res pixel art.

Take my 5/5 on graphics. You made me play a Kaizo-difficulty platformer when it took me years to beat Super Mario Land. Barely. That’s how you convert gamers.

I need to git gud tho.

Tangent that you’d understand better than anyone. Skip if you don’t care about the minutia of pixel art:

(I love doing pixel art and I always admired those who could work on canvases that were lower than 320x240px and still be legible.

Judging by the sprite being aroooound 8x8-12x8px?, the canvas looks like something like… 192x64px? Either way, that’s a canvas size range that I loooooooove, because pixel art looks real unique there.

Another thing I really appreciate is when pixel art games stay within their canvas resolution when doing any kind of modern animation. The flapping wasn’t some smoothly lerp’d layered movement of pixel art sprites, it was legit cycled animation. Or so I think. Either way, hope you appreciate my nerding out on these very very very specific technical topics. Please please please keep on working with this style. It made me way happier than anything else on the game ❤️)

Really liked the Sound Effects and the pixel art graphics! The wall jumping was a little bit weird to wrap my head around at first (especially because it often just made me fall down alot), but I like it, because I think it does give the game more of a challenge.

Great Game :)

Developer

thank you so much for the kind words :)

yeah the wall jumping/bouncing mechanic might be a bit too bouncy, I'm gonna experiment more with the amount

I enjoyed the game and liked the slider jumping mechanics, but I expect it can be refined more, and I know that the duration of the jams is short, but your game is really great. If you have time, I would love to try my game and tell me what you think about it and how it can be improved. I know that it is a download and I know that playing with a browser is easier, but your opinion is important :)

Developer

Thank you for your kind words :D I'm definitely gonna keep experimenting more with the jumping mechanics, I have gotten quite smitten with the idea.

Interesting style and beautiful art, although a little frustrating gameplay due to the mechanics of jumping into a wall (not a minus of the game, for me)

Developer

Thank you for the kind words :D I'm definitely gonna experiment with the wall bouncing mechanic :)

Awesome! Keep the wall bounce mechanic!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! :D but I do think I can adjust it or maybe making it dependent on a certain wall type :O

Submitted(+1)

I like the art a lot. I couldn't play it too long because the being pushed away from the wall when you hit it mechanic was kind of frustrating. Without that this would be really cool! The music was quite enchanting though, I loved that and the art style a lot!

Developer

Thank you so much for your feedback :)

I hear you about the wall bouncing :/ I think I should experiment with turning it waaaay down. The point isn't to make the player so frustrated they quit :O

Nice music and art! I like the progressive music. I would find the jump bar would get in the way sometimes when you're trying to jump up to the next screen. Also jump meter refill on land would improve the experience

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words, feedback and for playing my game :) it means a lot.

Yeah I REALLY regret putting the jump bar at the top >_<' I hear ya on refill on land, do you mean like instantaneous? or just that it only regens on land?

Submitted(+1)

Hee-ho. Very nice art and gameplay. I had a good time. Thank you

Developer

This is great. The only thing I have to say is I think it would be better if the jump bar refilled when you land. I also think the UI should be on the bottom of the screen because it got in the way of the player a few times.

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback :)

I did originally consider when the jump bar should refill, but I decided to try and go for a more juggling in the air kind of vibe which I don't think came across (judging from all the people asking to refill on ground only)

Also yeah, sorry, I simply forgot to fix that one place where you kind of is hidden below the jump bar >_<'

Good Game, reminds me of jump king

Developer

Thanks! that means a lot, it was a huge inspiration :D

Submitted(+1)

nice game! i like the 'fly' mechanic, but i'm not a fan of the way you bounce back off a wall when you're jumping too far in one direction.

Developer

Thank you so much for your feedback, originally the bouncing mechanic was meant to prevent players to hug a wall as the flew up it, but I probably could turn it down substantially.
