Game Description
BRAINWORM is a Snake-like arcade game where you control a parasitic worm devouring the brain of an up-and-coming presidential incumbent. Navigate obstacles like hardened brain tissue and deadly Macrophages ("Macs") as you sabotage your victim’s cognitive and speaking abilities. Do you have what it takes to cause debilitating brain damage?

How does your game tie into the theme?
BRAINWORM was created for two game jams: Godot Wild Jam 78 (GWJ) and Brackeys Game Jam 2025.1 (BGJ). Inspired by both themes, the duo at Hangover Sunshine explored the concept of a brainworm "erasing" the cognitive functions of a rising politician. The classic Snake gameplay was chosen for its resemblance to worms and its emphasis on avoiding mistakes—echoing the idea that "nothing can go wrong."

This is great, a really fun twist on a classic game. I loved the speech bubbles but found myself getting distracted! I wonder if there could be a feature when the game is over to "rewatch" or read your speech? I didn't want to miss any of the jokes :)

Developer(+1)

You know what, I was just thinking about that, like  a transcript of your speech that you caused. We'll discuss and see what we can do. Speech bubbles as a distraction have come up a lot so we keeping it in mind. Appreciate the play and time spent giving it a shot!

I found this pretty tricky. The political commentary was funny. Didn't know you could do two game jams at once lol

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Polished! I liked the intro shade. I also thought the politician and intro was fun and a version for good ol’ snake :) Thanks for the source too!

Submitted(+1)

Super polished, was pretty hard but I eventually beat it! The idea was super funny and real for America lol. The Macrophages didn't seem to respawn at all for me and if I died while the pop-up % text was on screen it wouldn't let me click restart, I assume it was blocking the mouse input.

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for giving our game a try and for the kind words. Game has a couple of bugs atm. With the Macs, it seems like they are stopping at 50% stability for most (we will squash that guy and get that fixed). The text thingy, yes! I forgot to set "pass-through" or "ignore" on those nodes' Mouse settings lol. Got that fixed and will push that once the jams end.

With difficulty, we are planning to talk about that and see what we can do to tweak that. You're not the only one who mentioned that and we do appreciate you calling that out.

Regardless, thanks for giving us the comment and for giving our game a shot!

Haha yeah I always forget to set those too. Also did you use SDFs for the little background moving blobs?

Developer (1 edit)

Good question! I have no clue as I am "programming challenged." Though I can tell you where I got it! We grabbed it from the CC0 license section of Godot Shaders. To be more specific, we used this 2D Procedural Water shader by flytrap. I saw it used in a previous Godot Wild Jam winner and ended up using it all the time (maybe way more than I should).

Ahh I see. It kinda looked like the SDF metaball visuals people make.

This was on my "to play" list from the jump, ever since I saw it in the gwj works in progress channel. I mean, I'm definitely living through it and I love the jabs at the current state of this country! I thought the way classic Snake and Pac Man intersected to create a spine crawly underlying creepiness that was pervasive through the game's tone. It was still quite cute, mind you, but I loved the execution. The art style was done incredibly well, too! Also if this was a submission to GWJ 67's "Parasite" theme I could see it doing very well there too.

Overall, solid gameplay with just the right amount of difficulty to keep you on the edge of your seat. The powerups felt like a power trip, eating those stupid little macrophages and feeding the parasite! This is what Elon's scared of. I think this is his idea of the "woke mind virus".

Great game. You should be proud of yourself for delivering such a title!

Hehe, one could still vote your game in this Jam. :-) Great message in the game!

Cool game. Reminds me of Magic Garden in UFO50 meeting Pacman haha. This is really well polished and I enjoyed everything from the art design to the gameplay. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Oh my god, that was literally the 1:1 inspiration! I'm glad someone has played it before and I'm not the only one. Glad you enjoyed it and do appreciate the time you took playing it!

Really well executed twist on the classic snake that is (sadly) topical too! I'm not sure if it was by design but the "Macs" seemed to stop spawning after the first minute or so. Well done!

Developer

Yo~! Thanks for giving our game a shot and for the feedback. That is in fact a bug that we are working on squashing at the moment. I think they stop spawning at 50% for some playthroughs. Regardless, appreciate you giving our game a shot and also for hype.

Loved the visuals for this game, and also the setting! It's very refreshing that you were not afraid to use your point of view about the world as a theme for the game, without falling into being actually rooting for any side. I think it's a clever decision!

Crazy aesthetics !
Play like a charm.

Delicious variation of a great classic. Perfect graphics and sound. I don't know about others, but I had no problem with the controls. Well made game and a lot of fun!

Submitted(+1)

The assets and shaders are so well done, I love it!
I missed a lot of what happens (the talk bubbles) while I focused on playing, perhaps I'll look for a play video later.
I think the classic snake stores your actions in a queue and perform them by order, which i expected here and felt like some of my clicks gone missing.

Professional and impressive submission.

nice game!

Visuals and audio are great! It's a fun twist on a classic game, but as mention by others, the controls are a bit of a let down at the moment. Hope you'll be able to fix it after the jam, and i'll be back to play again!

Developer(+1)

Aaaaay, appreciate you giving our game a try and also for the feedback. Yes, the controls do need some more love atm. We will look into seeing how we can tweak those.

Regardless, super appreciative of the time you took to give our game a shot and for the comment.

lmao what a good idea and execution! My only feedback is that I agree with the other commenter, the key presses felt off, and my first run through I had to restart because I couldn't move at all (just slammed into the wall at the start). But a restart fixed it for me! Great idea, and visual design, good work!

Developer

Oooo interesting, we'll take a snoop and see what could've caused the movement to not work at the beginning. And yes, we'll be discussing inputs and seeing how we can improve it. Regardless, thanks for giving our game a shot and for the feedback!

So much attention to the visual design. It looks fantastic! The music also works well. Unfortunately, I felt like my key presses were not registering or the timing seemed delayed, so I didn't even get to 75% after many tries. Maybe I'm just bad. I also wish I could read the candidates speech as it is being said, but the pace of the game felt a little too quick and unforgiving of looking away.  I may try the download version later to see if the controls work any better. Also, nice commentary on the state of things. Great work to the team!

Developer

Yo~! Thanks for giving our game a shot and for the feedback. Seeing a trend with some issues getting those inputs to register and we'll be taking a look this week and hoping to push an update once these jams come to a close.

As the stability of Jerry gets lower, the worm spawns get faster. I can definitely now see speed being a counterintuitive factor to the enjoyment of the politician's jargon as well as being a possible problemo to getting those precise turns.

Either way, huge appreciation for leaving a comment and playing our game!

Awesome Concept! and the artwork is great!

Submitted(+1)

Jesus Christ, this is fantastic. Funny af concept and the art style is so clean.
Fun to play, I just hope my actions don't result in more babies not being vaccinated.

Developer

Unfortunately, this game is real life and I will be sending you to jail >:^)

Jokes aside, appreciate the play and the love for concept, glad you got a kick out of it!

Nice stuff!  I love how smooth the UI and transitions are, I may or may not be taking notes... :D
