Cool game! I like how well you put together the 3D environment, as well as integrating the computer screen.

Love the spooky vibes and the visual effects on this one. Had a couple issues when playing:

--exe build crashed after pressing play: this happened twice in a row so I went to web build

--a couple times on the typing program, the text overlapped and got messed up, even though it was correct.

Submitted

I like it! For some reason makes me remind the Matrix from the phone part haha

I see what you mean when you said that your game is similar, but this made me 10 times more nervous than my game, so you did an awesome job! The visuals are on top and the gameplay is fun and simple. Loved it!

Developer

Thank you for playing!! I just like that we both thought of Welcome To The Game as inspiration

I am not good at flappy bird! That was my demise.

I got it to break a few times. One typing challenge it was all green but refused my input. Another the line wrapping didn't match up, even though I typed the correct sentence. And one of the flappy bird challenges I died on the last pipe, it said failed, then success.

Submitted

Oh and the Windows version crashed every time I tried to click "Play". Had to play in the browser.

Developer

Thanks for playing! TextEdit nodes in Godot were notoriously janky for me so apologies for the frustration. I'm looking into the crash too, really not sure why that happens for some people

Submitted(+1)

Nice atmosphere, sounds and visual effects. I am so bad at these minigames, I didn't manage to erase even a single file :-D

Developer

Could you tell me about that? Some people were confused by erasing with the trash icon, or were the minigames themselves hard to play? I can understand flappy frog - I'll adjust collision on that - but typing wizard is a little janky but doable. You might need to finagle some line spacing for the code, and the text prompts you just have to keep the faith and keep typing and it'll snap to the next line. Godot's TextEdit nodes are not nice to play with, and LineEdit won't wrap text unfortunately so it was the best solution I had!

Submitted

In the typing wizard, once I did not make it in time and twice I had everything correctly (green) but it wasn't accepted. I guess it has to do with the line endings. I wasn't sure how to switch to the next line so I probably inserted some extra space or newline somewhere...

Submitted(+1)

A really cool concept that is executed really well. Not a huge fan of the flappy frog bit but it was a cool experience.

Submitted(+1)

I loved it!! The atmosphere was great, very spooky. Game was fnaf-esque(which I am a fan of). I was on edge playing flappy frog hoping to not hear the strings of the approaching monster.

I liked that you could choose to either play flappy frog or play typing wizard, you didn't HAVE to play both, if you are a flappy bird hater.

There was some bugs though: The game would crash sometimes if I tried to click play right away, I found clicking through the other menus before fixed it. Also when I clicked to focus on the computer sometimes the click would register also on the computer UI and I would click things I didn't mean to (like mimic programs).

Super fun game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for reporting the bugs! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'm really not sure why the game crashes - were you playing on browser or did you download it? I think both crash if you go too fast for some reason. I'll look into fixing it.

The computer UI clicking bug is also noted. I intended to fix it but had more pressing things to attend to so that slipped away, as with things that happen in jams!

Glad you liked it and thanks for helping me with nav3d nodes!

Submitted(+1)

I'm sad and happy for watching today's Vikfro's stream - Sad because I knew it was a horror game and happy because I knew it was a horror game XD

The atmosphere is really well made, good job! I was really scared of turning on the computer because of those stupid voices around my head XD

That's why I really wanted to see more entities in this game. Once you understand the threat you stop being scared of it. The game could also have more minigames, because it feels very repetitive the way it currently is.

Anyways, keep up the amazing job!

Developer

I'm glad you liked the atmosphere! This was basically the sole thing I focused on this jam, and I think it has paid off :)

I do have plans for more entities if this places higher! More minigames too! I do agree that Pablo (what I called him during development) felt kind of samey after a while, but I had a lot more things to make sure was watertight before shipping.

Glad you enjoyed some of it! Thank you for the feedback too!

Up side:

You actually managed to get mouse to lock to the game!

That's the first time I've seen that in several FPS entries worth.

Down side:

I'm not in to horror games >.<

I managed to skip the exposition by accident:
The phone rings - I turn around - see glowy light - click on light - it turns from yellow to red.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I have begun to realize that not everybody likes horror games as much as I do :(
I'm not sure what you mean by getting the mouse to lock to the game? Is it common for games to not handle mouse input? I'm glad you appreciated that though haha!
And yes, thank you for pointing out the exposition. I think it has to do something with the interaction, but I also wanted it to be skippable if somebody was playing the game for a second time so they didn't have to listen to it if they didn't want to

Submitted

Yea, making it skippable makes sense.
Hope you figure out what it was :)

As for FPS mouse lock - I tried playing "Yawara", and "Sorcerayser", and the mouse kept running out of the screen. So you couldn't really control the character.

Now re-looking at it... Sorcerayser doesn't seem to lock the mouse at all.
Yawara has like a 50% chance, and if you unlock it, there's no way to re-lock.
In "Erase Me" though, you both have a limited range of movement (helps if mouse unlocks) AND you re-lock the mouse if you enter the computer, and back out.
So the controls end up feeling much better overall.

Submitted(+1)

By god, when you messaged me a_kimb0 and asked me to play the game, I was not expecting a horror game >.< I went ahead and powered through as much as I could, but I need you to understand that I'm the biggest wimp when it comes to horror games. The first-person perspective messes me up.

With that in mind, this game is incredibly well done at capturing the tone of terrifying me. I think the worst part for me was when I was just on the computer, I opened a file, and it just said "Turn around." Literally, nothing was behind me, and it was the part that almost made me cry.

The little minigames you have to make the deleting not repetitive was a good touch. I'm bad at Flappy Bird, but think with practice and maybe someone to hold my hand, I could figure it out. Could even see other retro computer games on there to iterate upon (e.g., Minesweeper, Snake, Solitaire). Just "Windows 98 WarioWare" it.

For feedback, I only really have a couple of notes:

  • The sticky note with controls was off-camera a bit. Not sure if that was intentional, but it made memorizing the controls at the beginning a lil' challenging. Accidentally hit ESC, and the web build did not like that.
  • Something about being able to tell which file is active or not was challenging for me. I swear I would have two files that looked to me like the exact same, but I'd open it and it would just say invalid. Not sure if there was another layer of a mimic file that I missed, so that could've been on me.
  • Flappy Bird is a hard game. I know I said I could figure it out, but I remember back in the day that game being known as the "rage game." If I could project, I'd imagine it might be too difficult for some users to complete and they may drop the game. Now thinking about it, it does feel a bit out of place narratively since you're on an old computer (this is a nitpick btw, nothing really wrong with having it).

Again, I want to say this game is super polished and do hope many more that did the jam get to play it (even if they are not horror-game fanatics). Would be cool to see if y'all continue working on it post-jam!

I am so appreciative for you taking the time to write up a detailed review of my game. It was a labor of love and keeping my sanity while I navigate a difficult time in my life so your comment really sent me over the moon :)

Thank you for being a trooper and playing my game despite not being super into horror! I definitely wanted to see if  I could maximize atmosphere this time around and I'm incredibly happy that was your impression. Also, the "LOOK BEHIND YOU" prompt is totally random and I'm so sorry you had the misfortune of having that. Call it bad timing. Or is it great timing?

Totally agree on adding in more games! I programmed the entire game myself and would definitely put in more games for more variation if I had the time. Flappy Frog was actually basically ripped from an unlisted game on my itch page because it saved me time (shhhh)!

For the sticky note, the intention was for you to zoom while in desk camera mode to remind yourself of the controls. I purposely put the note on the side of the computer so that if users didn't know how to leave the computer view, the relevant information would just be "right click to exit computer". I did consider the note placement as potentially weird to some but I did want to experiment with having the "tutorial" be in-world. Definitely valid criticism though! I grappled with this decision for a while.

Could you describe in more detail to me what you mean about the 2 programs being invalid? The mimic programs are the ones that aren't explicitly "flappy_frog.exe" or "typing_wizard.exe" so what you experienced might've been an unforeseen bug. I'll be doing bug fixes so do let me know!

I'll definitely be adjusting the collision on flappy frog. I was definitely trying to keep it in the style of OG flappy bird but now I realize that might not be a good idea for trying to progress in a horror game. Thank you for the input! Also as mentioned I would've loved to do minesweeper or something but flappy frog was just basically drag and drop haha.

I'm excited to play your game, and once again thank you for your kind words!

Honestly, it could've been more of an issue with my ability to tell the difference between them. I noticed sometimes, I'd miss like a single character or I think maybe a space in the name. Really don't think it's a bug, I just had a personal challenge. I'd then go back to delete it and just wasn't sure which one the invalid one was again. Talk about memory issues am I right?

If it's not already in, something you could do is highlight why that file was a mimic. Show which part of it was incorrect when it says it's invalid, and then replace it with another file, just keep that guy you got wrong and put it at the bottom of some list you have going on with all the other ones. That way, the player gets trained on spotting typical mimic traits. I'm spitballin' and nitpicking tho, so do keep that in mind : P

Submitted(+1)

Creepy! The first time I clicked a "mimic" file I left my seat a little lol. Atmosphere is really well done, I dig the graphical style. The objective was a bit unclear at first (I thought the trash can icon was "erasing") but after I figured it out I got the hang of it.  One bit of polish I'd suggest is when you click into the monitor to view it, it also "executes" that click on the screen as well, so I accidentally clicked files I didn't mean to click a few times. This game also taught me that I suck at flappy bird/frog. Well done!

Developer

Totally valid points! I noticed that too late in development and that was just one of those bugs where I went "eh", which I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with when doing jams. I also will relent and later on adjust the collision on flappy frog so it's not as true to the original. Thanks for the play!

Submitted(+1)

It took some time to understand what I have to do, afterwards the fun started! Good game!

Developer

Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

This was fun! I was very bad at flappy_frog and I think I would have done a lot better if I could just get that dang frog through the gaps. Fun idea. I didn't really know when I was supposed turn out the lights and stuff it seemed like constantly there were noises before I died. Maybe I just took too long :)

Thanks for the game.

Submitted(+1)

My only complaint is to close the tab on the computer, like an ad not all the visual permit to close the window XD

I didn't catch that i lose at first with the bluescreen. I didn't expect a creepy game like that at first it's really nice surprised

Submitted(+1)

Great atmosphere and experience. The graphics are really good, and the sound design also really helps cement the horror.

Developer

appreciate you long time danno

Submitted(+1)

This game was really fun (Although flappy is kinda hard lol). I even got chills as well, Good Job!

Developer

My playtesters also thought flappy frog was hard haha. I think a lot of people forget how difficult the original flappy bird was

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I would like to add that most of my erased % came from flappy frog. Once I noticed that I could hit the frog's head into the bottom of the top pipe, it got a lot easier!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

You got me in the first <spoiler>screaming</spoiler> part haha

I loved the mechanics, very creative, it transported me back to the early 2000s, the OS, the monitor, the atmosphere.

I had only one issue, one of the wizard typing inputs was breaking the line, making it very difficult to read the original text behind it. So I passed these. The text was "As I entered the old, abandoned house..."

Very fun and challenging. I, unfortunately, couldn't win on 2 attempts, I think I'm too bad at it 😁 Great job!

Developer

Yeah, typing wizard is a little janky with the way Godot handles TextEdit nodes. If you just keep the faith and keep typing for some of the typing wizard prompts it'll snap back to the line and you can keep going from there. I'm glad you liked it though! Hopefully you got to achieve at least 50% progress ;)

Submitted

Yes! I achieved around 60% on my best run, I try once more later!

Submitted

I dont have skill issues you have!! easy game!

uh, thanks...?
