Did you work in a team?
A total of four people contributed. I worked on the implementation and all the artwork. Akty Element worked on the music. Major Bruno provided a lot of the sound effects. And V3X3D provided some of the character animations.

Was the resolution a challenge?
One of the biggest hurdles we faced at first was scrolling. Due to the art style of bright colours on a black background, scrolling felt really choppy, so in the end we went for static screens with scrolling only when transitioning from one screen to another.

What did you learn?
How to actually stick to a deadline and release something. It made us think about when a game is considered "finished"! :-D

Cute game! Going for the static screens was a good choice and the levels were very well designed for it. May I ask what animal is planned to appear in the next version?

Developer

Thank you so much!

I’m still working on the level design, which will determine which animals will appear next, but as it stands it’s likely to be:

  • Crab (underwater, platformer-ish movements)
  • Mole (dig underground)
  • Frog (hop, hop, hop)

Wow this looked and sounded amazing! You really managed to create an atmosphere with this, and I loved the different animals.
There were tons of small details like the plants swaying, water drops underground, different footsteps, idle animation, and the player water effects.

I loved the art and colour palette which were really unique.

There was some confused dialog, e.g. when I was the chicken there were some mushrooms that would give fox dialog when interacted with.

Movement could have been a little tighter maybe - it did feel a little floaty and unnatural with the fox, and hitboxes and movement around corners with the fish could be awkward.

Also pressing enter during dialog should first complete the current line so it can be read before skipping to the next one.

adorable game! i had so much fun with these cute animals, i can't wait to see more of their adventures on a new version!

amazing works, congratulations!!

Wow reeaaly good looking game. Not so much playing but looking on pretty art )

Nice little game, super cute too. I was a bit lost with where to go with the chicken, but other than that it was pretty straightforward. The music is very relaxing!

Submitted

very beautiful animations and graphics. maybe the puzzles should have been more harder, but overall a very charming and nice experience

The mix of audio to fill out your ambient environment is super pleasing. It fits your graphics and game play tempo. They all come together nicely. I hope your vision was achieved.

Wow the graphics are excellent - so beautiful! I want to study them for my own pixel art learnings… (Btw what are your inspirations for this pixel art style?)

Music, atmosphere and character of the world and animals is really nice, too :) I enjoyed the game a lot :) It’s really nice and cozy to play…

Cool entry, I was stuck early on and had to find the solution for getting the fish stone but everything was straightforward. The art and audio is great and I like how all the animals handle differently.

It is the one of the most gorgeous looking 64x64 games I've laid eyes on. There's an awful lot to admire in the gameplay, the dialogue and the world building. Maybe the gameplay is a little bit hard in some parts for relative simplicity of the story and the dialogues. I found some of the jumps a bit punishing :D. Excellent work!

the fish was very hard to find. some sort of indication would have been good other then that it was a fun advanture!

Developer

I’m glad that you enjoyed it overall! As for that troublesome fish, do you mean that it was hard to find the fish swimming in the cave, or hard to find the stone that activates the fish?

Submitted

it was hard to find the stone that activated the fish

Absolutely beautiful and stylized game, I just wish it was easier to figure out where to go next.

I played this game on stream, the vod is up at http://bit.ly/bean-stream

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind comments, and for playing it on your stream. I think for the next version I’ll make it a lot clearer where to go next and what to do because a lot of folks have commented that it’s a bit unclear at times. 😊

I really love the art in this game, and the gameplay is really fun.

great game.

Thank you so much, I’m so happy that you liked it. 😊

Great game!

Anyway...

Developer

Hey, how did you manage to get the chicken down to the bottom of the mineshaft? 😱

Just in love with the visuals of this game, they work so well at such a low resolution while still being very evocative. The gameplay is super chill but I did find it a little obtuse at times which seemed a bit at odds with the chillness.  Noticed some minor issues with audio - missing sounds and sometimes the music didn't loop - but that's very nit picky of me! Overall just a great game. Also, a fellow Construct user *high five*

Developer

Returns fellow Construct user high five 😆 Thank you so much for the great feedback.

What do you mean by “obtuse”?

As for the audio issues, were you by any chance using Firefox when you played?

Submitted

By obtuse I mean that it's not always  obvious where you need to go. That's not necessarily a bad thing in a game but I just felt it didn't chime with the otherwise very chill vibe of this game. Particularly I'm thinking about the chicken here - unless I missed it, it's not telegraphed what obstacle it can traverse. The other early example I can think of is how the lever for the light isn't active until you've had the dialogue trigger it.

Ah, yes, my bad - I think I was using Firefox.

Great little adventure.  My 7 year old daughter absolutely loved it, BTW.  She wants to know what happens next.

Developer

Aww, that’s really made my day. I’m so happy your daughter enjoyed it.

I’m not entirely sure what happens next, to be honest, though I have some ideas.

After the jam I need to spend a couple of months working on my main project, then I think I’ll return to this game to expand the world and add some more animals.

When I do, how would your daughter like to choose which animals I implement next, and maybe give them names? 😊

Fun platformer/puzzle game! i had a great time playing and beat the game! can you play my game?

Developer

Thanks for trying it out, I’m really happy you enjoyed it. I’m on vacation at the mo, but I’ll definitely play your game at the weekend. 👍
