Secret Levels is a new art organization based in New York City that is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas. The mission is to study the intersection of video games and art as well as the cultural impact the medium has had.
For the inaugural exhibition in New York, inspired by the film documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself by Thom Andersen, examines the connections between various films and the city of LA. NYC in Video Games 86-93 takes a look at the unique relationship the city has with video games during this era, specifically the beat em'up genre.
This period also marks the end of the golden age of American arcades giving rise to the home console wars of the 90s. Simultaneously New York was changing as well with the 42nd Street Redevelopment project that had started taking effect during this time.

I would like to feature an indie bundle for the crowdfunding campaign. I am currently asking for keys to be donated, there will NOT be a revenue split. I realize this is a big ask and is not financially feasible for all devs. But If you are at all interested in this show and want to help make it a reality, this would be a huge help.
The month of April will be when the Game Jam takes place and developers can submit their game. Unlike most other jams, there will be no voting. I will curate the bundle based on the submissions that are received when the jam is over. The current timeline is to launch the crowdfunding campaign by the end of May.
Game criteria
- Your game MUST be a retro game inspired by this era of gaming.
- Genre or platform does not matter, whether it feels like a CRPG that came out on the Amiga or a platformer for the SNES. The more diverse the bundle is the better!
- Your game must be a complete game of a good quality.
- Your game must not be NSFW.
- No AI generated content
- Not all submitted games are guaranteed to be part of the bundle.
- Any game following the above criteria can be submitted, regardless of age or scale.
