There were times when I wanted to do a poll to gauge what players preferred and what content we should focus on. That should be a pretty simple thing to do but there are some complications because Itch does not have an in-built poll tool.
Because Itch does not have that tool, developers have to look elsewhere. Now, the first option is looking for something like Strawpoll and putting up a hyperlink. That's nice but, truth be told, we lose a lot of responses by requiring people to click a link and load a page. That's just how it goes and there's no way around it.
Well, an alternative is embedding a poll on the devlog. You can do that with Google Forms, and this way no one has to go off-site. We've done that before, but we stumbled on an issue: we got hundreds of fraudulent responses by people who wanted to shift the poll one way or the other. We could require people to log into their Google accounts, but so few are willing to do that that it's not even worth it.
Another alternative is Twitter, but they can only do four options per poll and, you know, it's offsite. So that's no good either.
If Itch had an in-built polling tool that allowed an account to respond to a poll only once we'd be able to really take player feedback a lot better, and it would really create a whole new way of engaging with our players.
