This is just a fun little thread I'm making just to see what you guys can do with scraps of wood lol
Basically, the premise is to build things with scraps of wood, planks, pallets, whatever have you that's mostly wood, and can also include the wall builder depending on what's being made, and these structures often being held together by as many nails as deemed fit.
note that the materials don't have to always strictly be wood, you're welcome to make things out of other materials if possible

as an example; behold, my first creation. the most uncomfortable chair known to man.

I also decided to start building a little "shanty town" in the garage by using a foundation out of floors from the wall builder and wood scrap, my goal is to surround the garage with it and expand it up through the roof, which you can see the staircase leading up to it on the second image

currently, there's nothing on the roof since i haven't gotten to that yet, i'm also planning on filling the "shanty town" with more furniture but that'll be a while

apologies for the mess btw, this is a second iteration of the shanty town, the first one decided to have a seizure and explode. Note to self, don't use planks and pallets as the foundation.

You can use the wood scrap instead of bricks!?

you can use any kind of scrap for the wall builder

This post has changed my life. Never again will building be the same.
Wait... does this make the mines actually a useful place again?

eh, i dunno

Wow, nice work, it's cool idea

so i loaded back onto the save after going to bed, and half of the wooden parts on the shanty town decided to explode everywhere, for some reason in the latest version nails are completely bugged and behave weirdly when the save is reloaded

the example chair was also a victim of this, but it seems to be stuck in place where i put it and won't move anywhere instead
i saw that glue was added to the game recently too, so i may try to use that instead as a better alternative to nails
edit: nevermind, seems that glue has a completely different use, it doesn't actually do anything with fixing items in place

If you want an alternative to nails you can use the Pin Box. Whatever you pin will persist through save-loading, but they are incredibly weak, so you'll have to spam a ton of them to hold. It's not great for pinning things to other objects that you will move or that aren't anchored in some way, cause if you move them they'll all break off unfortunately.

I'm not aware if anybody has noticed or figured out how to properly perform it but you can build Diagonally with the wall builder but it's VERY DIFFICULT if not impossible to line up with whatever you're building.  You can use spheres at the point you'd want to build diagonally at or any flat object you could stick in place, and you have to zoom in and click at very specific spots. You can alternatively use wooden planks and angle them where you'd want to start at, usually this is easier but annoying in cramped spaces.

I have considered using pins, but they seem quite impractical especially for larger projects like the "shanty town" i mentioned earlier. They might be too fragile to really use efficiently, since too many pins might cause major lag and pins also have very similar programming to nails, so i'm not sure if i trust them staying together if i save and load. I am willing to try pins though, i just have some doubts

fuck, I was testing in sandbox just now and writing a reply and my dogshit laptop shut off lol

I'm too lazy to rewrite but,

They're not good, even after a save load unfortunately. I was pinning boards to a small structure I build with bricks and after a save load only one of them held. They don't cause any lag when placed in large amounts, when you move the object they're attached to and they begin to break, that's when there's a bit of lag.

yeah, that sucks, i think we might need to wait until a patch to be able to build anything that easily
the only idea i have left is to physically hold things in place with stuff that sticks to the wall like shelves and such, but that's a really niche use and wouldn't be able to be used on most projects

0.8.2b is some time soon, so we will have to see if this gets fixed.

Honestly, since it's decoration and not really anything big... I would just use the physgun and welder, cheating it in through the mailbox and converting your save. I really hope nails are fixed, or some alternative is added, like the Welder from the Sandbox menu... or glue could be used on smaller objects, being far weaker but still at least stable to attach points....

Hopefully The Developer Doesn't Feature Creep And Add 100 Different Things That Aren't fully Implemented And Won't Be Threshed Out For The Next Couple Of Updates, And Instead Fixes Existing Issues Or Mechanics  (°°)~

i don't believe the physgun and welder work after save and reloads, that's the thing
i was considering using the welder, but it says it causes major issues if you save and reload and i'm not gonna tempt fate on that. As for the physgun, i don't know if it's true anymore but if you reload, anything you freeze with the physgun unfreezes and falls anyway

hold on i just realized, i've had this corkboard nailed down this whole time and it hasn't freaked out? yet every other thing i've made with nails has glitched out on some weird way
...now i'm thinking nails only will glitch out if the object they're attached to is nailed to more than one object, because everything else that has collapsed was nailed to more than one thing at once

Cause the corkboard doesn't need nails, it stays on the wall on it's own.

i'm aware of that,  i nailed it into place because i didn't want it coming off anytime soon
either way, there was also this "bed" i made that's part of the shanty town that also didn't explode for some reason

does anyone know if the current test build for 0.8.2b has fixed the nail bug yet? i'm still currently waiting on a patch to fix the nails

They do not, same goes with bee boxes Not saving hives stored in them.

Atleast There's A New Drive Box Model

I came into this thread expecting a shitpost I cannot believe the level of quality shown here

Was extending the small bridge I built for Ω-K, and accidentally unequipped my Fanny Pack, and my inv space decreased causing 7 molotovs to INSTANTLY explode

((You could use Bamboo(sugarcane) as a material | Incredibly weak, good scaffolding and very easy to get tons of))

Why were you carrying 7 molotovs in the first place lol

I think I was preparing for a specific event or burning leftover shit and ended up forgetting about them

You never know when you will urgently need molotovs to throw at something

Work in progress of Completely Woodifying  my base

Getting most of the wood for this from using the Hack Saw on Delivery Crates, and cutting down many orange trees

I recommend using lemon trees and even planting pinecones if you find them. You get more wood that way.

(1 edit)

I didn't realize you could plant pinecones... Is it only Raw pinecones or regular? I vaguely remember trying to plant one of them and it didn't show that little mound planting something usually would.

Just planted a ripe pinecone. Was this something in the release of 0.8.2 or is this only in the testing version?
