Dawn with the Lords

A declaration (manifesto)for anti-imperialist perspectives in tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs).

In the realm of RPGs (fantasy in general), immense wealth held by individuals can be attributed to various factors, including expropriation, exploitation of others, or even the conquest of lost treasures guarded by ancient perils. These themes encompass diverse aspects that enrich the game's context and narrative. Let's delve deeper into these concepts:

Expropriation and exploitation of others:

Within this framework, the affluent individuals have amassed their fortunes through ethically questionable means, such as exploiting natural resources, asserting control over vast lands, or subjecting impoverished communities to oppression. These characters may be depicted as owners of expansive estates, influential corporate entities, or corrupt political leaders. By exploring this theme, players are prompted to contemplate the ethical implications of such practices and seek alternative ways to address social inequality within the game world.

Conquest of lost wealth, safeguarded by ancient dangers:

In this scenario, the wealthy have uncovered ancient treasures concealed in perilous locations like dungeons, ancient temples, or submerged cities. They have braved mystical creatures, deadly traps, and formidable challenges to secure these riches. This narrative evokes a sense of timeless adventure, casting players as intrepid heroes who embark on perilous quests in pursuit of invaluable treasures.

As for adventurers, their acquisition of wealth and glory can be viewed as an homage to the ideals of meritocracy, colonialism, and capitalism. This portrayal allows for a critical examination of the underlying principles associated with these ideologies, compelling players to reflect on the dynamics of power and privilege embedded within their own societies.

However, it can be observed that, to a certain extent, there exists an ode of meritocracy, colonialism, and imperialism in the overall portrayal.

"XP for gold" serves as a defining characteristic of this alleged ode, elevating the pursuit of experience (XP) through the accumulation of gold. This direct association between wealth and power mirrors the realities of our world, where money often bestows privileges and influence. However, it is worth examining whether this connection needs to be replicated in gaming.

Roleplaying games offer us a platform to question and challenge real-world norms. By scrutinizing the emphasis placed on wealth as the primary means of progress and power, we can explore alternative narratives and more inclusive systems of rewards. Rather than solely linking character advancement to financial resources, we could consider other factors such as skills, knowledge, collaboration, or heroic accomplishments.

Furthermore, it is crucial to address the portrayal of henchmen, marginalized workers, and expendable cannon fodder within role-playing games. Frequently, these characters are depicted as disposable subordinates, with their lives holding little value beyond serving the goals of the protagonists. Such representation reinforces societal stereotypes and perpetuates existing inequalities.

A more inclusive and ethical approach involves reevaluating the dynamics of henchmen, providing them with more significant roles and agency. This entails exploring their personal stories and challenges, allowing these characters to evolve and develop alongside the main journey.

Regarding cannon fodder, it is vital to recognize the inherent worth and narrative contributions of all characters. Rather than treating them as mere hurdles for the main players to overcome, we can humanize them by delving into their motivations and crafting more intricate storylines. By doing so, we foster greater empathy and understanding, moving away from the notion that their lives are expendable.

The notion of "retiring with wealth and glory" prompts us to ponder the true accomplishments of characters in their grand adventures. While money and influence may have been instrumental in freeing the world from oppressive forces, it is crucial to scrutinize the identity of the oppressor. Occasionally, characters may have vanquished an evil Lich, only to hand over the kingdom to a billionaire who perpetuates precarious conditions, expropriation, and exploitation among their subjects.

This twist sheds light on the intricate power dynamics found in role-playing games. The king, once an ordinary adventurer who ascended through levels, embodies the relatability of "everyman." However, this irony becomes apparent as they assume the role of an oppressor, perpetuating a system that marginalizes and exploits the most vulnerable individuals.

Such introspection urges us to question the foundations and values that drive our RPG journeys. Should our ultimate aim be amassing wealth and attaining absolute power? Alternatively, can we redefine the notions of success and triumph by emphasizing collective well-being, equality, and social justice?

By exploring narratives that challenge established power structures and defy the status quo, we can reevaluate the prevailing norms within the realm of role-playing games. We can craft stories that inspire players to pursue meaningful transformations, both on an individual level and within the fictional societies they inhabit.

The evil King

During a forgotten epoch, when steam and mechanical wonders reigned supreme, the Enchanted Dominion of Mentalis materialized. It was within these mystical lands that a zealous monarch known as the Billionaire King held sway. His grand aspirations knew no bounds, for he yearned to traverse the celestial expanse, investing vast fortunes in the creation of intergalactic conveyances. Furthermore, his legendary automaton workshops birthed machines of unparalleled artistry.

Yet, concealed beneath his resplendent visage lay the sinister and disconcerting doctrines the King espoused. Under the guise of "long termism," he preached that the richest and most powerful, those who had ascended to epic heights of wealth and influence, were entitled to prolonged lifespans, defying the natural order of time. This pursuit of immortality among the privileged represented but the initial pronouncement of his nefarious edicts.

In the spirit of "pro natalism," the King extolled the imperative for these individuals to bear offspring abundantly, thereby perpetuating their esteemed "evolved" lineage. His ideology teetered on the precipice of supremacism, nourishing a twisted perception of superiority and exclusivity.

This, my dear, perhaps ought to be counted among our foremost adversaries.

This post alludes to the underlying concepts that inspired the creation of the anti-imperialist bundle.
