Description:
The 24hr Digital Design Challenge is an intense and exhilarating event where students are not only tasked with creating a fully realized project within a single day but are also encouraged to experiment, explore, and push the boundaries of their skills and creativity. With a designated design prompt, participants are given the freedom to think outside the box and take risks in order to develop innovative concepts, produce compelling mock-ups, and deliver a final design that breaks new ground. This demanding challenge necessitates quick and efficient work, strategic decision-making, and optimal time management, but it also provides a platform for participants to boldly venture into uncharted territory and discover their untapped potential.

What is this challenge all about?
The 24hr Digital Design Challenge as a new initiative for students from the Faculty of Arts and Design to test their skills by designing, creating, and communicating a fully realized digital design project within a single day from a provided prompt.
When will the challenge be held?
The challenge will be held on the Saturday & Sunday, the 14th & 15th of September, starting at 9:30am on Saturday with the Opening Ceremony (in 7C22 or on YouTube) before the official start of the challenge at 10am.
An additional hybrid event dedicated to students from TAFE Queensland Brisbane studying in the Faculty of Creative Arts and Digital Design or in the University of Canberra's Partnership Programs will be held on Friday the 13 of September, starting at 9:00am.
How long does the challenge take?
You will have a maximum of 24-hours to design, develop, and submit a digital design in response to the provided prompt.
What if I can't commit to the full 24-hours?
While the challenge is structured to last 24-hours to allow for the development of comprehensive responses, we understand that not everyone can participate for the entire duration. For those who can only dedicate 8-16 hours, we offer an Early Exit award. Please note that if you opt for early exit, you will not be eligible for the overall area awards.
Will I have a quiet place to work during the challenge?
Yes, if you registered to participate on campus, there will be two dedicated rooms (7C41 & 7C42) reserved for the challenge. While the start of the challenge coincides with the University of Canberra's Open Day, which will create a lively campus environment, these rooms will be exclusively available to 24-hour participants and essential UC staff, ensuring a quiet and focused workspace for you to work. If you registered to participate online, it would depend on your personal circumstances, but we hope you can find a quiet place to work.
Is there a theme or prompt?
Yes, the prompt for the challenge will be announced during the opening ceremony before the start of the event. You will be judged on how well you use the prompt in your design. Additionally, a video recording of the Opening Ceremony will be linked below, moments before the start of the 24hr Digital Design Challenge.
Isn't Itch.io for game developments or game assets?
Yes, the main purpose of Itch.io is to share game developments and game assets but it is also ideal for short challenges like this. You are welcome to submit any type of digital design to this challenge including digital games.
Can I work as a team?
Yes, you're allowed to work alone or in a maximum team of three. Additionally, all contributing members should be credited in your submission.
Can I still join if I'm not from UC-FAD, UC-TQB or VET-TQB?
At this stage the challenge is only open to these students, but future iterations may explore opening the challenge up to additional faculties or institutes.
What do I need to bring to the event?
It depends on the ticket you purchased, but if you chose to bring your own device then it's important to bring the laptop/hardware and all the relevant cables/equipment to connect it to power. We also encourage all on campus participants to bring a refillable water bottle and anything you think will help you rest if you decide to take a break (such as: a sleeping bag, pillow, comfort food and so on).
Can I bring alcohol to the event?
No, you are still bound by the UC or TAFE Student Charter throughout the course of the event whether your participating online or on campus.
How do I submit?
You will require an Itch.io account and a YouTube or Vimeo account to participate in this challenge and submit your digital design. Additionally, a short "how to" video tutorial will be provided closer to the date of the challenge and will be linked below.
What do I have to submit?
All submissions should include a project image, a video showcase of the digital design, and a short statement about the works meaning and development (which should be approximately 200-500 words long). Submitting your working files is not required for the challenge or judging but you do have the option to include them in your submission as long as they are submitted as a ZIP. However, be mindful that there is a maximum file allowance of 1GB per submission.
What do you mean by a video showcase?
It will depend on your project but in essence you will be required to capture every aspect of your project in a MP4 H264 format. Examples include but aren't limited to a video walkthrough, video showcase, video reading, video screen-capture, or a video render. The video showcase will be the main way we judge your submission.
I want to create something physical/tangible?
You are required to submit a digital design, but elements of your design could be physical/tangible as long as they are digitized in some way for submission.
Can I utilise Workshop7 or the Media Resource Centre (MRC) during the event?
Workshop7 will be partially open during the challenge. Specifically, from 10am to 2pm Saturday the 14th of September with access to the Assembly Area and the 3D Printers. All other equipment including heavy machinery will not be available for use.
The Media Resource Centre (MRC) will not be open during the challenge, but you will be able to borrow a selection of items before the event to use over the weekend to use for the event. Plus, you are more than welcome to bring your own equipment.
Can I use GenAI?
Yes, but a majority of the project should be original work and any use of GenAI should be documented and referenced in your submission.
Can I take audio files from other sources, or create my own?
Yes, audio (sound effects and music) plus fonts can be custom made or gathered from other sources. Just ensure they are appropriately credited in your submission.
Can I continue to develop my project after the challenge?
Absolutely, you hold all rights to any submission you make and can continue developing the project for as long as you want.
