Your game must be playable and fit in a 2k (2048 bytes) file. Please include this as a downloadable file with the suffix"_2k".
You are free to use zip compression and submit a zip file that contains your game if the zip file is 2k or less. Or you can just submit your game as a single uncompressed 2k file, it's up to you!
This should be the same as your 2k version in spirit but with some extra enhancements. You can include as much music and sound effects as you want (and any extra code needed to load/trigger/play them). You can use mp3 files, wavs, code, or whatever you'd like. You can also add some other small enhancements to make it more accessible like save games, game pad controls, mobile support, etc. The gameplay and graphics should be the same as the 2k version. You are not required to make a plus version, but it is encouraged. In your submission, please say what was added to the plus version.
Please try to make the plus version of your game run in browser so it is easy for people to play and judge.
To make things as inclusive as possible there are no limitations for this. So in addition to JavaScript you can use PICO-8 and other fantasy consoles, or even write it in assembly! Just make sure all of your stuff fits in a 2k file.
The theme is "SHIFT". Try to include some element from the theme.
Everyone who submits a game gets to vote during the 2 week voting period after the jam using the itch.io voting system. Categories will be Overall, Fun, Design, Graphics, Audio, Theme, and a special category for the 2k Version.
There are no prizes, but the top 5 games and top in each category will be announced on twitter. I will try to promote all of your games as much as possible.
I made a few games for JS1k and I feel like it's not quite enough to make a polished game. Bumping it up to 2k zipped should be enough to do some cool stuff.
Because the size is so small, there isn't much space for music. But music is so important to creating atmosphere. This way devs can focus on making a good 2k game and add good music separately so players can enjoy the game more. The plus version can also have more input options to increase accessibility. To be inclusive as possible, there is no engine or language limitation so any game can be entered that fits in the 2k zip.
There are many ways to write code that can self uncompress, but it's a bit of a hassle so let's just take that out of the equation. Also, bundling it up in a zip gives us a clear simple way to check the size of each entry. For those that want an extra challenge you don't need to use zip.
Yes, please just list everyone that worked on the game and what they did.
To help set the tone for this jam, the logo and the theme announcement are 140 character Dwitter programs!
