Digital games can be more than just fun; they can also offer learning opportunities on important political and social issues. At the bpb:game jam, we get creative and develop relevant games.
From July 19 to 21, 2024, we'll be hosting another round of this event series. Over the course of three days, we'll brainstorm new game ideas, design them, and turn them into playable prototypes. This year, the bpb:gamejam focuses on the theme "Countering Online Hate".
Many of us have encountered hate speech online, especially in the comment sections of social networks and in digital game chats, where discussions often go beyond the bounds of civility. How can we respond to this? What can we do to intervene? How can we prevent it from happening in the first place?
At the bpb:gamejam, we aim to create games that offer insights into this complex issue and can be used in political education. On the first day (Friday), we'll start with a barcamp — a participant-driven conference where topics are proposed spontaneously and discussed in sessions. We'll explore the theme and how digital games can address it. After that, we'll develop specific game ideas and form groups to create initial prototypes over Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, we'll present our results to each other and test out the prototypes we've developed.
If you want to participate in this local game jam, you can apply here until July 11: https://www.bpb.de/gamejam
