Card Game Combat Jam is a (semi) annual game jam where we want to encourage participants to use the Card Game Combat plugin suite for RPG Maker MV & MZ to make small games that fits with a chosen theme over a 2 week period. Participants in this jam will make teams of 1 - 4 people to work on these games together.

Theme for this year's Jam (voted on by participants) is:

 🤖 Robots x Ghosts 👻

10 20 copies of the Card Game Combat plugin suite will be made available as Community copies at the start of the jam. Depending on how many participants there are we may consider making more available before the Jam begins.

Schedule

  • Themes & Teams (Sep 1 - 14): Themes will be collected and voted on in a series of polls. Participants are encouraged to make teams of 1 - 4 to work on games for the jam.
  • Game Jam (Sep 15 - 29): Final Theme will be announced at the start of the jam. Game submissions need to be locked in by September 29th 11:59:59 GMT.
  • Rating Time (Sep 30 - Oct 4): MythAtelier Team and Jam Participants will be able to rate submissions based on four criteria (listed below).
  • Wrap-Up Stream (Oct 5 - 6): MythAtelier Team will do playthroughs of the Top 5 jam games on their monthly Dev Stream.

Rules

  • You are free to use any assets you want so long as you have bought a license to them or those assets can be used for non-commercial purposes.
  • Game submissions must be a new game created and published during the jam period. Submitting older completed works that match the theme will not be eligible for rating.
  • Game submissions must be free for the purposes of jam evaluation. You can develop the submission into its own standalone paid version after the jam is over if you so choose.
  • Game submissions should take between 10 - 30 mins to play. They can be longer than the specified range, however, will mostly be evaluated and covered on the Dev Stream within that time span.
  • Game submissions must be playable on a Windows PC with keyboard and mouse controls. If a different setup is required, please specify that on the game page.
  • Game submissions can be in any language of your choice, but, make sure to have play instructions for the game in English so the team will be able to play it on the Dev Stream.
  • Game submissions should credit every member of the team on the game’s page. If you are using external assets or plugins, please be sure to credit those as well in accordance to their attribution rules.
  • NSFW submissions are permitted for this game jam. Please read the FAQ question below on what restrictions may apply.

Rating

There are four criteria over which submissions will be rated. Participants will be asked to give a score from 1 - 5 stars for each:

  • Engagement

Was the game engaging to play? Did you feel compelled to keep playing? How deep was the experience? Would you play it again or recommend it to others?

  • Aesthetics

Does the game have a distinctive audio and visual style? How well used are the assets in the game? Did they contribute or distract from the experience?

  • Functionality

Was the game experience smooth? Did you run into any bugs (game breaking or otherwise)? Were the goals and mechanics clear?

  • Originality

Were the ideas presented in the game new to you? Does the game interpret the chosen theme in a unique way?

FAQ

  • I like Card Games, but does the game have to be about Combat?

Not at all! You can make any kind of Card Game you want, it does not have to be competitive nor confrontational. The plugin provides enough tools to achieve other kinds of games.

  • Can I make a non-CGC card game?

Yes! You can use other plugins or engines to make a card game and submit it to the jam. You can even submit analog card games so long as there is a method to distribute them (e.g. print-and-play PDF).

  • I tried my best but didn’t finish my game before the jam ended. What should I do?

Submit it anyway! We know most games made in this short of a time period will be incomplete. So long as you are able to convey your core ideas, that’s all that matters.

  • I don’t want my game to be shown on the Dev Stream for (insert reason here).

Let us know when you go to submit your game. We will respect your wishes and choose another submission to show instead. Your game will be mentioned if it is rated among the Top 5.

  • Can I make multiple game submissions to the jam?

Yes, you can make multiple submissions to the jam. Each game however will be evaluated on its own merits. If multiple game submissions are found to be identical (committing plagiarism or in some sort of vote stacking scheme), those submissions will no longer be eligible for rating.

  • Can I have a team larger than 4 people?

You can, but at a certain point it becomes an issue of coordination. Small focused teams tend to work better in a limited jam setting. It also helps constrain the scope of your game projects.

  • Can I work on multiple teams submitting to the jam?

Yes. Make sure you are credited for your work in each one. Try not to spread yourself too thin if this is your first jam.

  • Can I make Mature/NSFW games?

Yes, but please include those details on the Game Page. If this game is among the Top 5, we will request a SFW version of the game so that we can play it on stream. MythAtelier team can make a call to remove a submission if it goes too far or is in bad taste. The criteria for this removal is up to their discretion.

  • Can I use AI to make assets/code for the game?

Yes, you can but with an added stipulation. If you are generating assets with AI, please make the effort to customize it and make it your own. If you are thinking about using AI for art assets or coding assistance, we would strongly recommend teaming up with an artist or coder in the community instead. Do not pass up a great opportunity to make connections for future work.

The purpose of Card Game Combat Jam isn’t necessarily to put out finished games. It is to help build bonds between developers over a shared project and tools. We believe that solo projects that use AI in lieu of dev collaboration to not be in the spirit of that purpose.
