It’ll be nearly one year since Blaseball's Siesta started, so we’re providing some enrichment in the form of a game jam. Crabjam 2022 will take place from June 22nd to July 22nd, the astrological time of Crab, with a topical theme to be announced on jam start. Make a game from scratch in a month! Learn to code, write some songs, break out those crayons, whether you wanna try and make a game by yourself or work together in a team everyone is welcome. We’ll be even putting together a stream if we get enough entries!
Q: Lily what is a game jam?
A: A game jam is an event where you put together a game in a set amount of time, usually from scratch. They range from a couple hours to several months, with the most common usually being somewhere between 24 hours to a week. We’ll be doing a low stakes month-long jam. Hopefully this will give most crabs a chance to join in even with any vacation plans, and keep anyone from feeling the need to pull all nighters to finish their game.
Q: I’ve never worked on a game, should I still join?
A: Yes! Plenty of people do their first games during game jams, and a month is enough time where even someone who has never looked at code can put together a small game by themselves if they really want. We’ll be setting up resources with links to game engines and frameworks for all levels of experience from professional to “Lily what the fuck is a pointer what are you talking about” so even if you’ve never worked on a game feel free to join in!
Q: Do I have to make something digital?
A: Not at all! All games are welcome, whether that’s a tabletop, video games, board games, even homebrews or mods. The only stipulation is that it’s something you start working on at the start of the jam, but using pre-existing code libraries or digging up old songs is totally fine! Nobody is a cop just like keep to the spirit of the thing.
Q: Do I have to keep to the theme?
A: Nope! The theme is highly encouraged but if you already have an idea and you want the structure and community support to make it happen please by all means do so! That being said, everyone working with the same theme in mind is part of the fun, so if you can tweak your idea to fit the theme it might be worth doing so!
Q: Is this only for Crabs fans?
A: Both crabs and noncrabs are welcome!
