Creators of all types; we’re thrilled to invite you to take part in the Crayta October 2022 Game Jam, and the Theme is…

“Science Fair”

This Jam will run between:

10th October 2022, 11am BST / 6am ET and 17th October 2022 11am BST / 6am ET

There’s something not quite right at Harrowing High. On 5th October we welcomed you back to school with Crayta’s latest season, but this is no ordinary school. Something weird is going on.

In this month’s Build Jam we want you to get inventive and hit the school science lab armed with your new arsenal of primitive shapes, completely customisable touch controls and…the ability to sit down! What experiments will you formulate? What solutions can you concoct? It’s time to pull out the pencil case, throw out the textbook and get geometric.

  • Harrowing High explores the idea of two realities - a normal one, and an alternative “horror” reality. What aesthetic might be present at the school Science Fair in each reality? How might a mechanic alter depending on the current reality?
  • The new primitive shapes library offers a completely new way of creating, and can give a wildly different aesthetic to your environments. How can you use primitive shapes to create never-before-seen artefacts, rooms or even whole worlds?
  • The Harrowing High Science Fair is all about curiosity and advancing the fields of chemistry, biology and physics in every direction. Will you create something ethical and planet saving? Or will you just turn into an evil genius and make something that’ll bring about the end of the universe…
  • The Science Fair is an opportunity to create amazing code-driven systems and interactive elements, as well as to create stunning new visual and social packages.

And finally, as ever, we would love to see a wide variety of packages and blueprints for this jam. There’s no “correct” answer to what you should make or what genre you should work in.

The inspiration notes we’ve provided above are not requirements in any way - just little thoughts and ideas to get your ideas flowing.

Now… Be daring. Be creative. And get Jamming!

Science Fair Prizes

Overall 1st Place - $10,000

2nd Place - $8,000

3rd Place - $5,000

To win first place, the entry must be truly impressive and combine all of the key components  - functionality, usability, creativity and documentation.

  • Functionality - make sure that your package or blueprint actually works! Major bugs often prevent Jam entries from earning a prize,
  • Usability - it should provide a useful tool or ability for creators and be intuitive and clear to use.
  • Documentation - If your package is complicated, providing clear, comprehensive instructions is very important. Jam entries can often miss out on prizes if we simply can’t figure out how to get them to work.

The 2nd and 3rd places will be judged by the same criteria - but naturally the strength of each of these criteria and the overall level of polish will be taken into account to finalise the standings.

And then we also have 8 specific awards of $3k to give out.

Technically Impressive

  • Use our LUA scripting and our range of API's to create a technical package or complete game blueprint that is smooth, bug-free and offers creators amazing new utilities for their games.

Documentation Award

  • The package or blueprint that explains how to use it perfectly, even for the earliest of creators. This could be video, detailed forum, code comments, README or however you think is best.

Aesthetically Pleasing

  • Create something beautiful. This could be a single environment, or a set of templates to build a variety of environments, spaces or game pieces.

Most Versatile

  • Create a package or blueprint that could be used in the largest number of ways -  or for the most diverse range of games.

Best use of Shapes

  • Primitive Shapes are a brand new, incredibly powerful new range of building blocks that have arrived in Crayta. Award for best use of these in a package!

Small and Polished

  • Attention to detail; not overly complicated. Maybe a package or blueprint that just achieves one small thing, but does it really well.

Spooky spaces

  • What if the science fair goes wrong? (These things do happen…) This award goes to the best environmental build. Use lighting, PFX, scripting, audio and any other tools at your disposal to make an environment - or range of environments - to make us feel spooked or downright terrified!

Robots and Creatures

  • It’s ALIVE!!! If you were to create new life in your science lab, what would it look like? Organic or mechanical? How would it behave? What would it do? Can a user control your Creation by giving it instructions? The visuals will be important, but it’s the clever use of AI and behavioural systems that will be most important for this award.

We'll also have up to six $500 runner-up prizes for those honourable mentions that we just have to tell people about. It'll be possible to win more than one of these categories but we'd love to see as much variety as possible – SO GET CREATING!
