Briefly describe your projects key features and tech stack used
Key features of Tilt Pinball:
Head-tilt control: Players use Niantic Studios's face effect to control the flippers in the pinball machine.
Physics: This game uses a lot of Niantic studio's Physics Collider such as 'Dynamic Rigidbody', a tweaked 'Gravity Factor' and 'Mass', and heavy 'Bounciness' that allows for smooth natural pinball gameplay.
Unique animations: Position, Rotation and Scale animation is used on spinners, bouncers, and walls to manipulate the game flow, physical space and pin ball trajectory,
Playable GIFs: GIFs can be displayed within the game.
Dynamic face effects: Player’s AR glasses change each time the pinball hits a bumper.
Particle Emitter: To allow players to focus on the pinball by trail from the pinball.
Simulator: Allow for easy testing without the need to deploy apps into hardware. Easily control head tilting and saves a lot of neck ache.
What was the inspiration for your project?
I first saw face effect template being available for cloning. Upon starting the studio, I coincidentally placed a plane into the scene to notice the plane stayed in the same place not affected by face effect.
Looking at the plane made me think that a pinball game would be interesting since I do not need to integrate complex button inputs which I do not know how to.
I thought I will create a pinball game unique from Niantic Studio. Hence the machine layout is filled with Animations. I went through every feature available in Niantic Studio and try to make it a feature in the gameplay.
Looking at Ava's face in simulator for hours made me notice that the face effect is underutilised. Wearables are fun and easy to implement so why not. Initially I picked a mask to be worn but a bug caused the mask to always be in front and it blocked 60% of the gameplay view. Hence glasses is the better choice. I even put the score as a tattoo on the forehead just for fun.
After hours of game testing, I was inspired by my bouncers that changes colours upon collision to then change my glasses too! Now my glasses changes every few seconds and it is such fun to look at admiring different try-ons while trying to keep the game going! I started adding more glasses because I simply just love seeing them swap!
Finally we implemented a high score system because it's easier to share the game. This is how Tilt Pinball is born.
