Welcome back to the 2nd year of the annual DarkTober Game Jam! DarkTober is a game jam that goes on during the month of October and is hosted by yours truly, 5targuy. The goal of DarkTober is give creators an opportunity to challenge themselves to create a game that is somehow dark or centered around the idea of Halloween. (I'll explain what I mean by that later) So that by the end of the jam you'll have completed a game and can put something out there for people to enjoy just before Halloween! You'll have a little under one month to create your game. You can choose to work as a team (Look towards the bottom to find a discord code!) or do it Han's style... Solo! I don't care what engine you use to make the game, but if possible please please please have the download file be a zip, OH! and also, I will only be able to play PC (Windows) games. Try to create your own assets, and if you can't then try to find someone to help you in the community tab or on the DarkTober's discord channel. And lastly the game must fit the theme (Read the theme section). Got it? Awesome!
So clear your calendars, boot up your computer, and grab you favorite Halloween snack because we're about to get our spooky on!
So what's the theme? The reason it's called "Dark"Tober, as you can guess, is because I want everyone to make a game that looks like a Halloween game so we all can have something to help us enjoy the Halloween season! Now here's the thing, I'm not exclusively looking for horror games. The idea is that it "LOOKS" like a Halloween game. You could for example, make a visual novel about a demon/ vampire/ zombie falling in love with a human. You could make an adventure game about collecting the most Halloween candy. You could remake Angry Birds and instead of birds, fling around pumpkins. Stuff like that! So when you're working on your project and you start to feel like you're stepping out of the "dark" category just think: "Would this be something that people would play for Halloween?"
Also! There will also be a sub-theme released when the jam starts. You don't have to follow it if you don't want to, or have a good idea that doesn't quite fit it, but I'll put it out there anyways for those of you who are having a hard time coming up with an idea.
So, now that you know what DarkTober is all about, you still want to join? Great! Let's go over the rules again!
There is a discord server available for you to join and talk to other creators out there! https://discord.gg/EhfjXEQ
Want to build a team? Join the Crowdforge page too! https://crowdforge.io/jams/darktober
Don't forget to use the hashtag #darktober18 and @5targuy on twitter
So if you're as excited about Halloween as I am you should participate! There will not be any kind of ranking/voting system so don't worry about being the best. As long as you're doing "your" best then be proud of yourself! If you however decide that you don't want to join this time around that's fine too, but come back around and try out all the creations that come out of this jam and support eachother! Either way I look forward to creating a game along side all of you and sharing the outcome of my work and seeing what you guys make as well!
Happy creating! (And happy Halloween too!)
