All you know is that very soon, this game will die.
Welcome to the Dying MMO Jam.
A game jam about making a virtual experience that takes place in a fictional MMO that's about to be shut down.
There are a quite a number of massively multiplayer online games that have been released since the turn of the century. Sadly, fans have had to bid farewell to some of these games as they existed when the developers no longer saw the need to run the servers that keep these games playable. What was a huge part of people's lives for years ends up becoming nothing more than a memory... at least until someone emulates the servers sometime later.
Create a single player game that takes place in a fictional MMO that is about to be shut down.
This fictional MMO can be whatever you'd like: a throwback to late-nineties and early aughts fantasy MMORPGs, a science fiction MMO. a WWII FPS, a Mario-Kart inspired MMO. Anything.
The game can be in 3D, 2D, or both.
Twine games are acceptable.
Your game can be romantic, sad, funny, scary, whatever.
It can start years before the servers go offline or two minutes.
The only rule is that the MMO has to shut down in the end.
Submissions open Thursday February 3rd at 12:00 am EST and close Sunday February 20th at 12:00 am EST. If you don't finish in time no big deal, just let me know and I'll add your project later/extend deadline.
I'm not against starting the project now as long as a majority of what is made is made after the jam starts on. If you want to outline/write the script for the game beforehand that's fine, gather voice actors, or make some assets/environment/sounds/etc. I have a very basic set up in Unity made to get me going for what I'm going to submit and a few leftover voice files from my previous demo I'm going to use. Do whatever you're comfortable with.
