This means that even though two games may have very similar ideas, they will always end up very different.
From this sprung an idea. If from a single idea multiple games can emerge, then why not prove it?
Participate in this small jam with a highly specific theme and the way you view game design might (or might not) change forever. We're here to learn anyway.
Jam Structure
START TIME: Indicated at the start of this itch.io page by in your own time zone! Woah so cool!
It is HIGHLY SUGGESTED to provide a web version of your game, otherwise MUCH less people will be playing your game!
This jam is not ranked. That doesn't mean the stakes are low though! I don't know what a stake is so I do not know if it is low or high lol
Theme
The theme will be revealed at the start of the jam (here, on itch.io and on Discord), but there's something special about it...
The theme of this jam will be very specific!
A genre will be imposed along with a twist… and some other specifications.
When seeing the theme you will see a game in your mind right away.
PROS:
- Conveys an experiment about what stealing game ideas actually does;
- Prevents some of the headaches provided by "AAAAH I just realized my idea I've been working on for 8 hours straight is s***";
- Is much more rare than broad themes; this means that the odds of the theme of this jam being similar to another one's theme is very low.
- Provides a more straight-forward approach to game development that will increse the submission rate (less people will end up missing time and not sumbitting their game!
CONS:
- You might actually like the headaches provided by "HELP my overscoped idea I've made so much art and no gameplay for doesn't fit the theme at all!!!"... In which case, well... I won't judge you lol
Assets
- 🚫 Free assets are forbidden!
- ✅ Assets you have bought are allowed;
- ✅ Assets you have made before the jam are allowed;
Assets made before the jam must be disclosed in the submission.
Making your own art
Since you cannot use free assets, if you do not want to team up with an artist nor buy assets you will have to make them yourself.
The games are not rated on art! In fact, they're not even ranked at all... I encourage you to try making sprites, music and sound effects even if you are not satisfied with your skill level.
Drawing: if you want to make pixel art you can use https://www.piskelapp.com/, a very simple and free software.
Music: there are easy online DAWs that you can use, like https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/ and https://www.beepbox.co. There’s also https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-download/ that has a free trial you can use forever!
