Welcome to the (UNOFFICIAL) Game Grumps Game Jam or Grump Jam for short.

We have a discord now

THE CHALLENGE: Make a game inspired by the Game Grumps in a week.

THE THEME: Anything Grumps or Grumps Adjacent is welcome! AKA Steam Train, NSP, Sequelitis, Starbomb etc. It would be cool (but is not required) to incorporate audio from grumps in some way into your game.

If you're looking for more inspiration I would suggest looking at Game Grumps Animateds or compilations.

THE RULES:

  • don't be a dick
  • make a game I guess?

FAQ:

I DON’T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A GAME HELP?: Neither does the guy who made One Day For Ched but that didn’t stop him. The barrier for entry to make games is lower than ever, if you know even a little bit about programming I’d recommend checking out

  • Unity - 3D/2D - super popular (read: good tutorials and errors are super google-able)
  • Godot - 3D/2D - an open source game engine comparable to Unity which lets you use either GodotScript (based on Python) or C#
  • GameMaker - 2D - easy to pick up, it's also what Undertale was made in
  • SuperpowersHTML5 - 3D/2D - Browser-base collaborative game maker with google-docs style collaboration tools
  • LOVE2D - 2D - LUA game engine that gives you graphics, sound, and a game loop and nothing else.
  • Ren'Py - Python based Visual Novel creator, it's also what Doki Doki Literature Club was made in.

If you don’t know how to program you should check out

  • Twine - Visual Novel making tool, great for writers who don't know how to program
  • RPG Maker - Fairly easy to learn but it's only good for one particular genre of game

Or you can team up with someone who does know how to program.

CAN I WORK WITH A TEAM: Hell yeah! You can work on a team of any size, including a size of one!

CAN YOU HELP ME FIND A TEAM?: Hell yeah I can! (You can also click "Community" up above)

CAN I MAKE A TABLE-TOP GAME?: Hell yeah! I’m not quite sure how that would work in terms of uploading your game but we’ll figure it out. We'll make it work I promise.

WILL THE GRUMPS PLAY THE GAMES?: To quote Arin out of context “Dude, I don’t know, man.” This is a completely unofficial jam, until otherwise confirmed no one at Game Grumps even knows this is a thing.

WHAT ENGINES/TOOLS CAN I USE?: Whatever you want! It’s about having fun and making stuff. Use whatever you’re most comfortable with.

CAN I USE ASSETS I’VE ALREADY MADE?: If you made them or have the right to use them, yes! Stealing other people’s art isn’t cool, dude.

CAN I USE CODE I ALREADY WROTE?: Yes...ish. Utility libraries and custom game engines are totally fair game. Games that are already partly completed are not allowed.

WHAT'S THE PRIZE FOR WINNING?: The real prize was the games we made along the way.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE A GAME ABOUT, CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME ABSTRACT IDEAS TO GET STARTED?:

You bet I can!

  • Spoiler Owl
  • Gotta have those Sugar Crisps
  • Mister Business & The Video Game Boy (the one who wins)
  • How's it Goin' Dude?
  • Danny Socksbang
  • Digging the Qumran Caves as a child
  • Wolfjob
  • Barry, put that in
  • Arpeegees
  • "What are we gonna do today Arin?"
  • How's it Goin' Dude?
  • Toilet Princess
  • Wrestle with Jimmy

WAIT I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS: Cool, tweet at me!
