Game Jam 360 is a game jam with the goal of creating games for playing in a 360° immersive digital dome theater. The digital dome theater is the next evolution in the traditional planetarium format, however due to the technology of digital projection domes are now opened up to much more than just stars and other celestial objects. Games for domes are few and far between due to some of the technology constraints with ultra-high resolution, curved dome display surface, and challenges with motion sickness inducing effects. Some game developers are delving into this world, especially as VR game development becomes more commonplace and supported within game creation tools. Many types of games can be created for the dome, most being single or possibly a few players at a time, while other developers are working on entire audience interaction of 20 or more people at a time.
What does gaming in a dome look like? Here's a simple 'capture-the-flag' game created for the dome in action:
What type of immersive interactive experience do you want to see in your local planetarium? Join Game Jam 360 to create the next generation of immersive gaming!
Submissions must utilize a 'dome camera' which is a camera which outputs a fisheye equidistant view (here's some info on the mathematics behind this if you're interested: http://paulbourke.net/dome/fisheye/ ). This view can be outputted to a fullscreen display or over Spout or NDI for receiving in another application which will then project the game onto the dome. Games can be single player, or multi-player. Games are not restricted in content but should be 'family-friendly'.
