Make a real screenshot from a fake game! Deadline EXTENDED to October 7th at noon EST!
Have an amazing idea for a game, or just interested in game art generally? Want to let your imagination run free without worrying about your concept being "practical" or easy-to-implement?
Introducing Game Mockup Jam #2! Draw, design, or 3D model a mockup for a game that doesn't exist! Spit out a visual concept as creative as you'd like without having to worry at all about game balance, playability, or coding — and get feedback on it all.
View the first Game Mockup Jam, run by Hairic Lilred, here. Join the Discord for this jam (and any future art x game dev jams) to chat and share/receive feedback:
- You have the whole month of September to create 1-4 fake screenshots, in any medium, of a game that doesn't exist. For inspiration, feel free to check out submissions to the original Game Mockup Jam, or look at the optional themes below! Submissions can be .png files, .jpg files, and/or looping .gif files (but not non-looping .gif animations!).
- Anytime during the jam period, feel free to submit by uploading 1-4 .png files, .jpg files, and/or looping .gif files files by doing both of the following:
- adding a downloadable .zip with all of your files to the "Uploads" section of your itch.io submission project
- adding all of your files to the screenshots section of your project
- When you're submitting your project to the game jam, you will have the option to check a box if you're looking for constructive feedback on your art.
This is an unranked, collaborative, and non-competitive jam! Join the Discord for this jam (and any future art x game dev jams) to chat and share/receive feedback here!
- No AI use — seriously.
- No submissions that promote or encourage bigotry or hate, including (but not limited to) racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and/or transphobia.
- Multiple submissions are allowed, if you're feeling super motivated!
You don't have to incorporate any of these themes into your submission, but feel free to use any of them if they help spark inspiration!
- "Is That You, Bigfoot?": How would urban legends and folklore manifest in unexpected ways in a small town, large city, sprawling countryside, or harmonious forest?
- "Tri-Toned": Use only three colors!
- "Seeing the Unseen": How would you design a game with hidden or intangible elements, like gravity reversals or invisible enemies?
- "Cosmic Cuisine": What would it look like to be a critic reviewing different intergalactic restaurants — or or an intergalactic restaurant's multitasking chef?
- "Outer Worlds Gone Wild": Combine vintage aesthetics with futuristic tech.
- "Hollowed Out": Have your project be inspired by the T.S. Eliot quote "This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but a whimper."
- "The Art of Cartography": Include a map in your project, or make your entire project about mapmaking!
- "Till We Have Faces": Have your project be inspired by mythology (e.g., Greek, Egyptian, Nordic, Korean), ancient art, and/or unjust gods.
- "Sul Sul!": Include one or more character creator mockups in your project. Is your character an alien, animal, hero, villain, or something else?
- "The Aesthetic Multiverse": Combine different, distinct art styles within a single cohesive experience. Cubism x cozy game art, anyone?
Hi! I'm Jaylus, or Julia, a hobbyist 2D artist, game developer, and avid game jammer. You can view my creative portfolio here. I've done all of the visual art for a good handful of jam games, including games that have ranked in the top 10 for art (known as presentation or style) out of 6500+ submissions in GMTK 2023, and out of 7500+ submissions in GMTK 2024. I would love to create more community around indie game art and thought this could be a great place to start!
Special thanks to Hairic Lilred, the organizer of last year's Game Mockup Jam, for generously giving advice about this jam.
