What’s better than making one game?
That’s right, MORE THAN ONE GAME!
GAMES WITHIN GAMES WITHIN GAMES!
PRETTYSMART GAMES PRESENTS: GAMECEPTION JAM!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a game where the playable character(s) can play nested games within it. These nested games should have their own playable characters and completely different gameplay. It's up to you if the characters know about each other (or you?) Choose whatever game genre or story you want! (You can even make a game within a game within a game… how far will you go?!)
Rules:
- Your project should include at least two nested games. The player character(s) of your initial game must be able to control another game with its own player character(s). Or, if you don't have characters, it must fit the theme 'game within a game'. More nested games are encouraged if you have time!
- Your player character must be aware that they are playing the nested game. It's up to you if they must complete the nested game to proceed, or if they have a choice of several nested games. (Again, it's okay to ignore this rule if you don't have characters!)
- Don't include content that would be viewed as discrimination, racism, sexism, etc. If it would make someone else feel bad, don't do it.
- Don't include content you don't own or have the rights to use.
- You can start thinking of ideas or researching beforehand. This is a chill jam!
- If you have a previously created itchio project that matches the criteria (at least one game nested within the initial game) you may submit it as long as there is a free demo or version.
Research Ideas:
- Think of themes that lend themselves well to nesting stories. (Games about bird nests are also acceptable)
- Write a bunch of game ideas out on slips of paper. Get a bunch of boxes of different sizes. Put a piece of paper in each box, then put each box inside another box. Now make this series of nested games.
- Read about frame stories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_story
- Look for free fonts/sounds/art that inspire you.
Presented by prettysmart games. Thanks to our Twitch community for the idea!
We'll be streaming progress and results on August 5th 4pm PST over at DrMikachu's Twitch channel.
