You may choose to incorporate this theme into your game or not. Whether it be spooky or spoopy, the choice is yours when it comes to how the Halloween vibe will be implemented in your games! There are not any hard limits on what you make it about (within reason) so flex your creative muscles!
What kind of games can I submit?
Your submissions for this game jam are heavily encouraged to be some sort of analog game! This will allow us to rapidly prototype ideas for mechanics that might be difficult to implement via programming. This includes the crafting of physical components like a board, game pieces, and so on. Examples include:
How do I submit a game?
When submitting, people are given the option to submit a project from their itch.io page! Make sure to do this, and on your game page add a rule pdf, images/files of needed game pieces, and any extra detail that would be needed to understand the game, or just to extend the story! If you have questions about this process, we are happy to help!
It is also highly encouraged, but not required, that you make a short video explaining the mechanics and theme of your game! This will help get people interested and also facilitate the process of teaching others how to play.
Can I work in teams?
Yes! Working in teams is encouraged! Especially if you and your teammates have a diverse and balanced set of skills you can all mutually benefit from.
When should I make the game?
The game jam is open from now till the end of October 2023 so you have till then to join and submit work!
Additionally, we will most likely be streaming and going over different submissions once all the games are in, but expect an announcement at a later date for specific details!
Is this competitive? Will there be prizes?
This is not a competitive jam. As of now, there are no prizes. However, here's the exciting part: depending on the number of submissions, we might be able to organize a small post-jam party to bring everyone together and play all the games! While there are no physical prizes, the experience of sharing and enjoying your games with fellow creators can be its own reward. This is dependent on many factors, so details will be posted as we get more information.
With that being said, make sure to have a fun time creating neat games!
What is the scope of this jam?
Try making something you can physically hand to a person and start playing like a deck of cards, a few sheets of paper, perhaps some dice, a manageable amount of pieces. Think about the components that make up your favorite classic board games and think about how they use a limited number of pieces in complex and economical ways.
We encourage everybody to participate irrespective of their skill set! We love games and we love having fun with our friends. Have fun and let's make some cool games!
