What is a Zine?

Traditionally, a zine is an original, self-published booklet that usually follows a particular theme or topic, made by one person or a small group. These booklets usually consist of text and images that are physically cut and glued in the original copy, for photocopies to eventually be made. The copies are usually stapled and/or bound in any fashion, and often passed around or sold in small circles. Zines can also be shared online, either through scans or photos of the original booklet or as a downloadable format if the zine is predominantly made with digital tools and programs. These are commonly known as e-zines.

Zine works usually vary between text, comics, photos, essays, collages, stories, fanfiction, illustration, doodles, poetry, and personal journals. With the expansive use of the internet, zines have also varied in terms of what can be featured in e-zines, such as music, games, audio pieces, and animation.  Themes are practically limitless, ranging from politics, social theory, popular figures, hobbies, single-topic obsession, and so on.

fanzine is a non-professional, non-official zine produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon to often share with those who share their interest, such as genres and pop culture.

How does a Jam Work?

Inspired by game jams, this jam challenges fans to create zines in a short amount of time with either a small team, or by themselves. Zines will need to be submitted to this projects itch.io page by the deadline. Afterwards, all zines will be showcased next to each other, like an art exhibit of fan creations! Optionally, we will have a project Discord server (link is above) during to make communication easier between fans who are creating for this project, and for any questions for the project runners.

The format of the zine is up to you; if you choose to make a traditional, stapled zine, you can either scan pages or take pictures of the content inside!
