The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Becker College Club is excited to offer the Jump Start Game Jam for interested high school students, their parents or teachers on June 13-14. The virtual event is free but preregistration is required by June 9.
===========================
A game jam lets participants try their hand at creating a video game — from coding on up. "Our Jump Start Game Jam has been designed with first-time participants in mind," said Gavin Camlin '21, IGDA Becker Club vice-president. "We know that tons of high school students who have a passion for games are searching for fun, new things to do during the pandemic and we thought a game jam might hit the spot."
Those who sign up will also get the chance to hear some mini-talks from game industry professional like Owen Leach from ZeniMax Online (Elder Scrolls Online), Gwen Frey from Chump Squad (Kine) and David Lennon from Proletariat (Spellbreak).
"Creating a game is a great experience," said Robby Williams '21, IGDA Becker Club secretary. "It opens up a whole new world. Every game jam I've been involved in has always produced some amazing work."
For participants, there will be a dedicated communications channel on Discord (click the link to join the server now!) with IGDA Becker Club student members so that if anyone participating online has questions, wants advice or bumps into any problems they will be able to connect.
The club will also provide all who participate with an introductory game jam “kit.” The "kit" will include some game jam basics, free software recommendations and some game assets that the participants might need.
The virtual event will be co-sponsored by MassDiGI with whom the club collaborated last fall to run a pilot effort as part of Massachusetts STEM Week.
