Hello LANCER community,

This is a low-stakes game jam to make a one-shot module for LANCER RPG. I wanted to organize this because I know our community has so many people with cool ideas, and are just waiting for the right moment to put the pen to the paper. Well, this is the chance!

The main reason why this jam asks for one-shot modules is small scope. It's simply easier to make something smaller, compared to a multi-mission module. Other than that, the jam is intentionally very freeform. You can make something that's fully contained, something that can start a campaign, or something that can fit into an existing campaign. You can use squares or hexes. You can work alone or in a small team. You can build upon an old idea you had, or start from scratch.

(This is a working document. There won't be major changes to the event, but there may be some tips or new information that gets put out here.)

Theme (Updated 12/22!)

The theme of LANCER One-Shot Module Jam is Leviathan!

This could be something literal, like a giant creature in deep sea or deep space. Where is this creature, and what do people want from it?

It could be something Hobbesian, referring to a powerful government enforcing social contracts. What is the contract in question? How do people react?

It could be something metaphorical, like a gigantic spaceship, fleet, or machine. What is its mission? What happens to it?

It could be about an organization or person named Leviathan. Why are they called that? What is their cause, and who opposes them?

Or... it could be something completely different. What will you create?

Requirements

  1. Must follow the Lancer Third Party License. (It's a very generous license and easy to read!)
  2. Must include a pdf file.
  3. Must be playable without purchasing anything, with the exception of LANCER Core Rule Book.
  4. Maximum team size is 5. Each team may only submit one work.
  5. Final submission should credit all team members, and if you used any external assets (including other modules), they should be credited as well.
    1. If using external assets, make sure that you're allowed to use them!

Here are some things you're allowed to include, but are not required for submission:

  • A battlemap
  • Custom-made art
  • New sitrep type
  • epub version of the module
  • LCP, or JSON export of NPCs
  • New frames, mech licenses, NPCs, or NPC templates

These things can take a lot of effort to make. The goal of the jam is to create a one-shot module, and adding these things may make it more difficult to complete your module. Talk to your teammates (or yourself) about what you can reasonably achieve. Be mindful of scope creep!

Other Considerations

Please DO:

  • Feel free to collaborate with others! Making something can feel daunting at first.
  • Feel free to have your own style! You don't have to follow the style used by other publications.
  • Design with the intent for the final product to be playable in a single session, whatever "single session" means to your team.
  • Try to keep your scope limited! You can always work on more stuff after the jam.
  • Include a content warning if your creation deals with heavy themes.
  • Take care of yourself while participating.

Please DO NOT:

  • Create content that directs hate towards protected groups. (This is also part of the Lancer Third Party License)
  • Use content created by Generative AI, such as artwork and prose.
  • Disparage works made by other creators.
  • Sacrifice personal well being in order to complete this project. Late submissions will be allowed for up to a month after the due date.
