Briefly describe your project
I love to visit historical sites but don’t really like reading all the notice boards and seeing dull 2d images that they provide on sites. So, I set out about creating 3d model reconstructions of various sites around my town of Trim, County Meath in Ireland. The town is known for the castle where Braveheart was filmed but also as a heritage town, so it has many sites to visit. Sadly, a lot of them have been eroded by time. I started with Trim castle (110k visitors a year) and with the Lightships VPS overlaid my 3d model on site. The site is approximately 100x100m wide so I wanted to test / push the boundaries a little with Lightships VPS and see how it would handle a large-scale model. My 3d overlays accurately on the foundations of buildings across the site and stays very stable while walking the site thanks to the accuracy of Lightship VPS. I only used one wayspot scan at the entrance and was surprised that the model did not shift while walking around the entire site. I plan on recreating 3 other historical sites around the town to create a mini walking tour that is guided by Niantic maps. The gameplay for this project is exploration of Trim castles grounds as there is not much on the grounds only foundations of buildings. There is also the opportunity for users to explore the interiors of the buildings such as the Great Hall, Armoury and blacksmith’s which were all created in 3d. I plan on adding in 3d characters that come to life / triggered and tell you about the space you are in once the user in specific areas of each site. Hope you like 😊
