LNJ, or Lucky Newt Jams, is the fun and fast game jams we hold through the year. They all take place within a month's time: one week for recruitment, two weeks for the jam itself, and one week for rating the games. Then the games that rate high enough will be added into a bundle, with profits split equally between all creators. Please be sure to read through the Rules section before you enter a submission.

Theme

This jam's theme is Videogame Hacks. What tropes, mechanics, or themes common in video games that you think would translate well into a TTRPG, or a setting or adventure for a TTRPG?

Do you have an idea for a game that plays like a fighting game, complete with special moves you can use if you can just get the numbers you need? What about a game that uses the mechanic from some sports games to choose a strategy in secret and watch it play through against what Player 2 chose? Is there some way to use the farming sim theme for TTRPG players? Or what about a TTRPG of your favorite game (sans issues with copyright laws, of course)?

What will you come up with?

Rules

All entries to this jam must:

  1. Be a TTRPG, or for a TTRPG. I'm not going to break out the old debate on what makes a TTRPG a true Tabletop Roleplaying Game. Use your best judgement. Supplements such as settings and adventures are included, as long as they include a hack of some sort. Please leave your video games at the door - at least for the finished product.
  2. Fit the theme in some way. The hack doesn't have to make up the entirety of your game, but at least be recognizable to the average gamer. Remember, we're looking for hacks of tropes, mechanics, and themes, so direct references to a specific game isn't needed.
  3. Be your own creation. Please mind copyright laws, and understand plagiarism will not be tolerated. To put it simply, Swiper no swiping!
  4. Not promote hatred, violence, etc towards any group of people. I'm sure you can find a different jam for that, but it's not this one.
  5. Be accessible for free during the ranking process. This ensures that all games can be ranked. You can use Community Copies or as a (limited time) PWYW, whatever works best for you and your creation.

You can:

  1. Submit multiple games. The more, the merrier!
  2. Work individually, in pairs, or in teams.  Just make sure credit goes where it's due.
  3. Submit old and/or new games. The classics can be just as fun as the new releases, after all.
  4. Have your game set as paid or PWYW. I recommend paid because you're putting work and time into this, but that's up to you.
  5. Make your game any length. Whether it fits on a business card or takes several pages, it's welcomed... though I might have to skim through small novels.

Examples and Resources

If you're not sure what kind of game we're talking about here, some examples are:

  1. Consoles and Controllers by Loreshaper Games
  2. Shadows of the Ages by Loreshaper Games
  3. Whistling Wolf Café by Lucky Newt Games

Also, if you're struggling for mechanics that can translate well for videogame TTRPGs, the Lumen System is great for it. For ideas, you can always turn to TVTropes Videogame Tropes Page.

Feel free to join our Discord Server for more help and ideas.
