A central mechanic revolves around the player getting near enemies to siphon their souls. This ability also works off of a combo system, where there is a window of time that it can be used again after a successful siphon. This encourages risky gameplay where the player can easily get overwhelmed trying to keep the ability chain going. The player is rewarded with souls which they can use to further upgrade the ability. The theme is also present in the events leading up to the game, where the main character has to make a deal with an evil spirit, despite the risks, so that he can survive.
