Here we go again!

Do you enjoy the Magical Girl genre? Have you made a game for Magical Girl Game Jam (MGGJ)  with plans to keep working on it, but need a little motivation to pick it back up? Or maybe you wanted to join a MGGJ, but ended up too busy.

If so, this is the jam for you! Let’s keep those projects rolling, or start a new one if you’d like.

Magical Girl Game Jam discord link: https://discord.gg/ayHQNVjy2Y - This is the discord for the main Magical Girl Game Jam series, but we'll be posting and sharing progress in the #continue-it-mggj channel there! Feel free to check out the rest of the server too.

To participate in this jam, follow one of these three goals:

  • Continue and/or expand upon a game you made for any previous MGGJ, 1-10.
  • Work on a project that was planned for a previous MGGJ, but never got off the ground.
  • Start a NEW project, using a theme from any of the previous MGGJs. (More info below!)

I’ve seen all sorts of exciting projects in the last 5 years of MGGJ, and I’d love to see them expanded on. Let’s get together and keep that creative spirit burning!

The primary goal of this jam is to get some work done! Add a new level, start that game you’ve been thinking about, update those unfinished sections that didn’t make it for the original jam.

Magical Girl Requirement

All games should feature at least one girl with magical powers. A classic mahou shoujo character will fill this requirement! Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, Pretty Cure, & Yuki Yuna Is a Hero are all good examples. However, you are not required to follow anime troupes if you don’t want to. The magical girl(s) should have a major role in the game, but does not need to be the main character.

Themes

If you are continuing a game from a previous MGGJ, keep using the same themes as before.

If you are starting a new game, please check out the previous MGGJs and pick a theme to follow:

Rating (Devlog!)

I was on the fence about ratings for this jam. I want this to be about getting some work done and making games, rather than competing. But at the same time, it’s nice to have an incentive to check out the games and the end and see what we all accomplished.

So, for this jam there will be one rating criteria… a devlog! Please track your progress as you have time and make updates; Alternately, your devlog can also be a postmortem style retrospective you write at the end, if you'd rather focus on working on your game rather than regular updates! You'll need to have it available online if you'd like to be rated. Some places to post and share your devlog could be:

  • Devlogs on your game page.
  • A thread in the Community tab on this jam.
  • A link to a Google Doc or other cloud document.
  • A thread on social media. (Try to make it easy to follow if you go this route!)

Games will be rated on the criteria of the devlog itself, and the implementation of the updates in-game… i.e. how well did your planned and documented progress make it into your game.

I do want to emphasize that this is a CASUAL jam overall. There are no prizes planned. If you’d rather just work, and not do a devlog, that’s perfectly fine!

Other Rules

Again, this jam is meant to be fairly casual, but there will be a few rules to follow:

  • Include a girl with magical powers… main character, side character, enemy! Anything’s fine, but they should be important to the game.
  • Please choose a theme if you are starting a new game. See the MGGJ links above to find theme options. There should be something for everyone!
  • Keep NSFW content to a minimum. Games submitted to this jam should not be pornographic… games with nudity, explicit sexual content, etc. may be removed at my discretion. Violence, gore, and mature themes are allowed, but please consider putting a content warning on your game.
  • Board/card games ARE allowed. This is a change from MGGJ, but I do believe that video games will likely get the most feedback here, so keep that in mind!
  • In MGGJ, games must be free-to-play upon submission. I’m actually NOT going to enforce that here. The goal is to continue a project, and if you feel that it’s worth charging for at the end, by all means! However, I'd suggest at least including a free demo. Any game that is pay-only may not receive much/any feedback, as jam participants probably aren’t here looking to buy something.
  • Games do not need to be complete to be submitted! This is part of why the devlog could be important, as it will help share your progress and challenges along the way, even if you don’t “finish” your game.
