Make-A-Maker Jam is a 4 week game-jam where you have to create a level maker/editor.
Interpret this however you like.
- You must be able to make and play your level. Saving/Loading is not required, but is welcomed.
- All coding must be done during the jam. Referencing past projects is perfectly fine, but copy-pasting an entire game is not allowed.
- Any music, sound effects, sprites, etc. taken from online are allowed, but have to be credited.
- You cannot use assets from copyrighted games or from creators that don't want their work used. For example, you cannot use sprites from a Mario game in yours. Likewise, you cannot recreate Mario's sprites yourself. Taking inspiration is fine, but simple recolors are not allowed.
- Max team sizes are 4 people. You can work alone if wanted. List your entire team in your game description.
- Following the theme is advised. It will be announced when the jam starts.
Base Gameplay: How fun is the base gameplay? If there was a game without the level maker using this gameplay, would it be fun?
Level Parts: How interesting are the level parts? Are there multiple enemies? Are there pickups? Or is it only simple walls?
User Interface: Is the game visually appealing? Can you find where everything is, or is it cluttered?
Simplicity: How easy is it to make a level? Are the controls clear and make sense?
Polish: Is the game polished enough? Is it super buggy and near unplayable? Does everything look finished (to a fair amount, this is a jam)?
Theme: How close did they stick to the theme?
- Easy switching between Making and Playing is always nice.
- Having a simple base game makes it easier to have interesting and engaging level creation. For example, Super Mario Maker's core gameplay is relatively simple, being running and jumping. The power-ups, enemies, and interesting block types make for some really fun levels!
- Grid snapping level creation is the simplest and most effective way.
- Have fun!
