The Make Visual Novel Assets! Jam is the first and only asset jam for visual novels!— We think!  Don't quote us on it, alright?

This jam is 2 weeks long, and your goal for this jam is to make assets for visual novels.  That's it.  We're going to help people Make Visual Novels.

Submission Criteria

1. Your submission has to be an asset.  But what is an asset? (Click me for more info)

For the sake of the jam, here's what we're considering assets:

  • Any graphically visualized resource.  (Sprites, Backgrounds, Live2D models, Prepackaged GUIs, etc. etc.)
  • Any audible resource. (Recorded voice acting, sound effects, music, songs, etc, etc.)
  • *glass shattering* a miserable pile of secrets (Sorry, I always wanted to do that, etc, etc.)
  • Any written narrative resource, scripted resource, or scribed resource. (Stories, screen plays, outlines, templates, etc, etc.)
  • Any written or precompiled logical resource.  (Programs, software utilities. scripts, etc etc.)
  • Any educational resource, in any form it might take.  (Tutorials, lectures, video demonstrations, etc.)
  • A collection or compilation of the above.
2. Your submissions must do one of the following for visual novel developers:
  • Simplify development for the creator.
  • Improve the experience for their readers.
  • Manage, assist or streamline processes for the team.
  • Problem solve for the developer.
  • We were going to use those as an abbreviation for the name of the jam, but we were worried we'd attract the wrong crowd.
3. Your submissions cannot use Generative AI in any shape or form.
  • Generative AI cannot be used as part of the submission.  This includes AI chatbot tech!
  • AI cannot help you write, script, illustrate or inform any part of your process in creating your asset.
  • AI cannot create your thumb nails, place holders, whatever.  Don't use AI at all!
  • Listen, I changed my name to remove the letters A and I out of it, that's how serious it is.
4. Your submission must include a usage license or terms!
You may choose your own, but here's a few examples of licenses you could pick! Think we should provide a different example?  Me too.  Talk to Stella on the Discord if you have another recommendation.
5. Your submission must include a demonstration! The demonstration must be one of the following:
  • A screenshot of it in use. Ideal for large art assets like backgrounds.
  • A graphic compiling samples. Ideal for art/graphic assets with many states or components like sprites or interfaces.
  • A captured animated gif. Ideal for small VFX and assets that are intended to move.
  • A demo recording. Ideal for audio-only assets.
  • A 00's era meme. Ideal for carbon dating you!
  • A video clip of it in action. Ideal for all asset types.
  • A tutorial video clip explaining its usage. Ideal for assets whose benefit is not immediately apparent.
  • Story assets, like pre-written scripts, screenplays, etc, can use an excerpt or outline.
6. All submissions must be freely available until March 1st 2025
If you want to make it paid later, that's cool.
7. Work on submissions can begin at any time, but the asset must have its first ever release during the submission window.
New, or never before released for use stuff only!

Prizes & Awards:

$100 goes to the highest voted, by quantity among all submitters. Everyone else gets street cred, redeemable for one (1) virtual high five.  Only people who submit can vote.  If for some reason you cannot accept the winnings, it'll go to the next person and so on.
