Well done, this visual novel is heartbreaking, and absolutely beautiful. I need to go reconnect with some people now after playing this.

SOME CONTEXT

I played this somewhere in the middle of my May Wolf marathon. I remember that I was a bad snep and peeked at some reviews and impressions people left. The thing that stood out ot me was a review saying this game had one of the best written sex scenes in a FVN they've read. Being the curious cat I am, I had to find out if the game will manage to live up to the sky high expectations I now had.

WHAT I LIKED

That opening disclaimer. How can one little otter be so smug?

The custom clothes were fun! Life's a beach, that speedo hanging on for dear life... I enjoyed seeing how people tinkered with the provided sprite clothes.

Jack's neuroses and insecurities were interesting. I am a bit tired of meek, insecure protagonists constantly having breakdowns, but Jack was fun and seeing him try to overcome his issues prevented me feeling the usual frustration. Plus I have a soft spot for lions but shhhh...

The... best written sex scene in a FVN ? - When I got to it, I didn't really expect THIS would the scene. While I don't agree, but I enjoy it for what it is. I find most erotica writing fumbles at some step, but this one was fine. I respect that it went for less glamorous parts of sex. I also appreciate that it tied it to Jack's insecurities, where an awkward or bad sexual experience can be something that messes with him years after, without making it some grand trauma.

On a related note, I've added "fish out his dick" to the long list of erotica writing phrases that inflict psychic damage to me.

Fergus and Bill were wonderful! They are so supportive, to the point where Jack wonders if he deserves them. I don't blame him, they ARE just too good for this world. Roommates that are supportive, funny, pay your rent and encourage you with "Go get that wolf cock!" deserve the world. I enjoyed their dynamic as a couple and with Jack.

"So that's what keeps Fergus screaming the night away". This entire scene, just... wow. The disclaimer promising things getting hella gay wasn't kidding.

WHAT I DISLIKED

There's some fuckery with tenses being mixed up that was distracting, but rare and not a big deal. It mostly happened during the flashback scene.

The conversation Fergus and Jack have before the date felt a bit stilted and expository. When Fergus started listing all of Jack's flaws and insecurities felt like it could have been integrated into this conversation more gracefully. The scene does recover quickly, but that particular moment took me out of the experience.

This isn't a real flaw with the story, just my personal windmill to fight, but what the fuck is Derricks job? It felt to me like he's twisting himself into a pretzel into trying to explain it, but only ending up talking very vaguely. Instead of saying he's a property developer, architect, investor, city councilor, urban planner or anything specific, he talked like a techbro who is "reinventing" an existing thing like housing. While it helped give us some insight and showed us the wealth disparity between the couple, this entire conversation was missed opportunity for learning more about the characters and setting.

The conflict at the end felt like it came and went very abruptly. While it didn't come out of nowhere and Jack's insecurities were well established, I think the entire thing wouldn't feel so abrupt if they were given more time to slowly fester before resulting in a big freakout at the end.

CONCLUSION

I enjoyed this entry! It was fun, sweet and a really nice pick-me-up kind of story to brighten your day. It felt like it came from a genuine place and said what it wanted to say about courage and self-worth, while also serving us a ridiculous banana-hammock-speedo bulge. Best of both worlds really.
