Welcome, Game Devs!

Create a 2D shooter game with an economy infrastructure powered by MetaFab to compete for your share of $10,000. MetaFab is a suite of developer tools that enable the world of digital collectibles in a carbon-neutral and player-friendly way.

MetaFab is the easiest way to create in-game currencies, items as digital collectibles, player accounts & management of players, in-game economies, and so much more. More specifically, for this jam, some ways you can use MetaFab include...

  • Player account creation, management, and save state.
  • Quickly create in-game currencies that can be spent to purchase items, upgrades, or traded amongst players or NPCs
  • Launch items as digital collectibles that can be used in-game or used as materials for better items
  • And more...

Additional Theme for Your 2D Shooter: During our voice chat kickoff celebration in Discord we collectively decided on the additional theme of "Unique Bullets."

Some ideas we discussed for the theme included bullets that: (1) either heal or damage (2) bullets that follow the cursor (3) bullets that have random effects (4) guns that shoot household items and other unique objects.

These are just ideas around the additional theme of Unique Bullets

Interpret however you would like. Not all bullets need to be unique, but this additional theme is Mandatory, meaning you must incorporate it into your 2D shooter.

1st through 3rd place prizes (in USD via PayPal) as follows:

  • 1st: $7.5k
  • 2nd: $2.0k
  • 3rd: $0.5k

Referral Bonus:  All winners will receive a 10% bonus on top of their respective prizes if they refer someone else to enter the jam. Please note referrals must be unique and new. That is, multiple people/submissions can't refer each other or engage in any behavior meant to "game" this referral system. If someone referred you to the jam, you could paste a link to their itch profile in a custom field as you submit your game.

Note: this is our second jam with a $10k prize pool. If you have a question about the integrity of our jam, feel free to ask our community or team publicly. We distribute prizes to jam winners promptly after the final rankings are decided.

  1. Individual entries are allowed, but teams are encouraged
  2. You are free to use any game engine you want
  3. No outsourcing of work to anyone entity/individual not listed on the team's roster
  4. Royalty-free/free-to-use assets may be used, such as:
    1. Sound effects/music
    2. Fonts
    3. 3d / 2d models
    4. Textures
    5. User interface elements / Icons
  5. The goal of a Game Jam is to create something original, avoid the substantial use of premade game mechanics, or copy/paste existing games or projects, including those previously made by the individual or team.
  6. The game's core mechanic must rely on at least one MetaFab system, and theoretically would be broken without the MetaFab API (it wouldn't be able to be worked around without reimplementing a different system entirely).
  7. The game must be playable and free of game-breaking bugs or crashes
  8. The game must be rated "T" or lesser; no "M" rated games. No:
    1. Profanity
    2. Nudity
    3. Racism/sexism
    4. Homophobia/hate speech
    5. Drug/alcohol use
    6. Gambling

Submission uploaders and judges will vote on entries. The voting period will last one week, starting after the deadline. Entries will be ranked on a 1-5 scale in the following five categories:

  1. Fun / Replayability / Addictiveness
    1. How fun is the game to play?
    2. Does the game leave the player desiring to continue playing?
    3. Does the game's length rely on new content, or is it replayable?
    4. Is the game the right difficulty/level of challenge, or is it too easy/frustrating?
  2. Gameplay/Controls/Performance

    2. Are the mechanics of the game clear to the player?
    3. Are the controls intuitive / make sense?

  3. Asset Quality (Graphics/audio)
    1. How good does the game look, and how well does the style fit the game?
    2. How fitting are the music and sound effects?
  4. Use of the MetaFab API
    1. How reliant was the game on the services provided by MetaFab?
    2. How well did the game implement at least one of the MetaFab systems?
  5. Innovation/Originality
    1. How unique and creative is the overall experience?
