The 2022 MGDP Game Jam will be our first ever game jam where individuals and teams work on making a game that fits a theme in a little over 2 weeks.
The theme is “Duality Puzzles of Nature”.
There is a good and an evil side to everything, but what is important is how we behave and the decisions we make, with the goal of achieving balance.
The aim of this theme is to force you to think about the design of your games and the value that each decision provides,
- Do bad decisions make our life harder?
- Do good decisions bring us closer to balance?
- And do we get to choose how we get there, or is that ultimately decided for us by a higher power?
You can interpret this theme however you like, just make sure that YOU know how your interpretation fits the theme, as you’ll need to tell us this upon submission.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If your game runs on a desktop, rather than a browser, please make sure that it is resizable, and can run in windowed mode!
Who can enter? Anyone, of any age, from anywhere. You can work alone or in teams.
When does the jam begin? The jam begins on the following day/time, depending on your time zone (see the itch.io countdown above if your time zone is not listed):
What is the theme? The theme is “Duality Puzzles of Nature”.
What can I make my game in? Anything, provided you can upload a file that runs on Windows or browsers and doesn't require any additional hardware or software.
What assets can I use? The game should be developed during the jam, but you may use pre-existing code and can use whatever art and audio assets you have the legal right to use.
When should I submit my game? While the jam concludes at 13:00 BST, we recommend uploading something nice and early, and updating as you go! Once this concludes, all submissions will be shut - with no opportunities for late submissions!
Who will judge the games? Games will be judged by the public as well as members of the MGDP team, once all games have been played a winner will be chosen.
What will the games be judged on? Games will be ranked against the following criteria: enjoyment, creativity, presentation, and how well they fit the theme of the jam!
Is there a Discord I can join? Yes! , click here to join our discord!.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If your game runs on a desktop, rather than a browser, please make sure that it is resizable, and can run in windowed mode!
Who Can Enter?
This is an online game jam, so anyone, from anywhere, aged 13 or older can enter the jam. (Those younger can take part, as long as a parent or guardian uploads the game). You can work alone or in teams. There is no limit on the number of people per team and people can be in multiple teams. Only one person needs to join itch.io and submit the game. However, if others on the team also join itch.io, they can be tagged as contributors. (On your game's itch page, pick "Edit", "More", "Admins", and follow the instructions).
What's the theme?
The theme will be announced at the very beginning of the jam. Your game should follow the theme, and you will be asked how your game fits the theme on the itch.io submission page. That being said, you will not be disqualified from the jam if your game doesn't adequately fit the theme.
When does the jam begin and end?
MGDP Game Jam 2022 begins on August 5th, 12:00 UTC and ends on Friday August 21st, 12:00 UTC.
How are the games judged?
Enjoyment - How enjoyably the game is to play.
Creativity - How interesting, original, creative, and inventive the underlying idea is.
Presentation - How the game looks and sounds.
Theme - How closely does the game work within the theme.
These criteria will add towards an Overall rating.
Who can judge?
All members of the public are able to vote in this game jam!
Once the rating period is over the top games will be reviewed by our judges. The winning games will then be shown with their public ranking displayed.
How does Itch.io's ranking algorithm work?
Itch.io takes into account the number of ratings a game receives to ensure that things remain fair (for example, a game that receives 1 five-star ranking will not beat out a game that receives 100 four- and five-star rankings). The exact nature of this algorithm is not made public knowledge.
Cheating Prevention
If you suspect foul play or encounter a virus, please use the report button on Itch.io.
Here are some places where you can find art, fonts, music, and sound effects for your games.
