Midsummer Game Jam in Sweden
Midsummer Game Jam is a rapid result driven game development event where teams create various experiences over the course of 1 week at Spelkollektivet in Sweden. It’s an in-person game jam which aims to gather over a hundred game developers from all over the world, forming teams of 2 to 5 people.
The theme for this event is focused around the concept of drawing inspiration from something, and each iteration of the jam aims to have a new take on just that. Each participant will contribute to the pool of inspirations that other participants can work with.
Due to the limited amount of space (~100 people) there will be an application system, where each participant who signs up to join will need to be approved and confirmed before arrival.
Location
The game is located at Spelkollektivet in Sweden, in the small village of Väckelsång outside of Växjö. It’s fairly easy to travel to the house with public transport. We typically recommend people to fly to Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup), and from there take the train to Växjö, and from Växjö take the bus (240 or 840) to Väckelsång. There’s no need to book tickets for the train and bus in advance. We recommend downloading the “Länstrafiken Kronoberg”-app for your phone to purchase a single ticket all the way from the airport to the house.
Grocery store
If you’re planning on making your own food or are just looking to treat yourself during the jam, there’s a grocery store that has almost everything one needs in life, a short 5 minute walk from the house.
Accommodation & food
We offer free foor and accommodation for the event. If you’d rather make your own food, there is a kitchen as well as microwave ovens you can use. We always serve vegetarian food, and sometimes there's a carnivore option available. Free coffee & tea is available throughout the event.
There’s various options available for accommodation, and we recommend one uses earplugs and/or a sleep mask, to make it easier to share accommodation with others.
Bunk beds
We’ve got a larger room with 10 bunk beds (20 beds in total). We provide all bed clothing needed.
Air mattresses
We’ve got various rooms available with air mattresses. We provide basic air mattresses with pillows and bed rolls.
Tents
We’ve got a large lawn in a safe community, so if you’re interested in being closer to nature during the event, you can bring a tent and sleep in it.
Private bedrooms
We’ve got 50 private bedrooms, but the majority of them are used by the people who live at Spelkollektivet. If you’re interested in renting a private bedroom for the event, reach out to James Newnorth (james.newnorth) on Discord. The rate is 280 SEK per day.
Theme
The source to draw inspiration from during the event is:
Games made by people attending the event.
When signing up for the event, each participant signs up with a game they’ve made to add to the inspiration pool. It can be a released game, or a prototype they made at a previous game jam.
At the start of the jam, each participant will get a drafting number which determines in what order they may pick a game for their group to draw inspiration from. Each team can only pick one game, and the team can’t pick a game which one of its members submitted.
It’s up to the team to determine what drawing inspiration means, but the intention isn’t to create a copy of the game.
