I like how you can aim the barrel up and down. Though, at first I thought that it was bugged, but I was just aiming it down to the ground.
I thought it was fun! I had the same challenge - I didn't realize I was shooting straight down at first, but once I figured it out I definitely enjoyed blowing up the pirate ships.
