✍️Welcome to Narrative Jam🕹️

✍️🕹️Narrative Jam is a three-day-long writing jam (unranked) where you create the fundamentals of narrative structure for video games.

Thank you Retro Jam 2021 and Gunnar Clovis for inspiring me to make this!

✍️🕹️Writing Requirements:

Your narrative design story, ideas, game, and anything else must be an original idea.

The theme is Crescendo. You are welcome to use your own theme or inspiration for your original idea.

Your writing may be as complete or incomplete as you'd like for the three days! At the same time, I recommend you share your narrative structure, flow, story, dialogue, character sheets, and anything else on your Itch.io or website portfolios.

-this is crucial for finding work in the industry. Share anything versus nothing at all.

✍️🕹️Guidelines:

1. Title of the game

2. (MINIMUM) Two sentence logline/two sentence pitch for the concept of your game

3. (MINIMUM) 12 Sentence synopsis

4. Have fun and write your to heart's content

*You’re allowed to work alone or in teams.

*With NSFW content you must add appropriate warnings.

✍️🕹️Q&A:

Does my narrative structure need to run on a program like Twine or Yarn Spinner?

No, throw your work on an Itch page description or a Google Doc for all I care :D

Can I use premade scripts or ideas?

Yes! AS LONG AS THEY ARE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL WORK.

Why are you doing this?

Sharing, participating, and collaborating in these narrative design jams will make the video game industry a more accessible place for entry-level artists and young students!

I'm passionate about storytelling. Every element of a video game is crucial and narrative design is far too overlooked. If you look on Itch.io, I couldn't find ONE writing-focused jam in the past 24 hours and that is scary! Writers like me get overwhelmed with art, programming, and marketing. It's time we just focus on the story for the player and create plot concepts that thrill audiences.

Hopefully, this jam connects you to other writers, gives you a place to showcase your talent, and lets you get creative.

Now, let's do this! I'm a writer who gave you a platform, deadline, and a theme so no excuses for not knowing what to write or where to share it XD.

(Narrative Jams will occur once or twice every week; some will have longer deadlines :D)

Examples

Title of Game: The Nest

Pitch: A 2D point & click puzzle adventure on a discarded astro-laboratory. A singleplayer discovery game that requires audiences to keep their eyes peeled for fascinating antiques.

Logline: In 4090, Lafayette Harrison, a futuristic collector-extraordinaire, is sent by I.C.E.C.R.E.A.M. (The International Coalition of Explorers Chasing the Reaches of Extreme Anterior Motion) to find three rare items on an abandoned space station called The Nest. Although, it seems the International Coalition was misinformed about what’s truly hiding under piles of high-tech junk.

An example of a synopsis written in Google Docs

Here is an example of how my newest story, The Ruins of C’thel, is formatted in Yarn Spinner. Yarn Spinner is made for easy importing into Unity Engines.

Story and dialogue branch files through .yarn, .twine, and even .json can be shared within Dropbox, Google Drive, Github, or whatever is most convenient for you :D

Here is an example of how cutscene format would look.

Use a format like this or something similar as you form who or what is in your world :D

Character sheets might include the following:

◦character name, occupation

◦race/age/gender

◦physical/visual traits

◦emotional/personality traits

◦likes/dislikes

◦greatest hopes (goals)/fears

◦religious or philosophical beliefs

◦backstory
