Welcome to the Not My Lang Jam! A jam for people interested in languages.
Whether you already know more than one language or not you can participate in this jam!

The main rule of this jam is that any game or story you submit must be written in any language outside of your native language(s). The language you choose to use can be a language you're already learning, a language you've always dreamed of learning, or a language you've created yourself!

You don't need to be fluent in your chosen language to participate. Just try your best and don't worry about making mistakes!

An optional theme will be announced at the start of the jam.

OPTIONAL THEME: Faraway
Maybe the player is going on a faraway journey? Or maybe the setting is in a land far far away?
You can interpret the theme in any way you like as long as it follows the rules of the jam.

Rules:
*All games/stories submitted must have been made during the jam period.
*Both digital and analogue games/stories are allowed.
*AI submissions are not allowed. Avoid using translation software as much as possible.
*NSFW is not allowed. This is a jam where anyone of any age is allowed to participate.
*No hate. Racism, sexism, homophobia etc. is not welcome.
*If you're under 18, make sure to get your guardian's permission first before taking part in the jam.

FAQ:

Are Conlangs like Esperanto or Toki Pona accepted?
Yes! Conlangs are welcome. You can also make your own language if you wish.

I want to design my own language for this jam. Do I have to wait for the jam to start before creating my own language?
You can create your own language before the jam starts, however you cannot start working on the game or story before the jam starts.

Can I provide translations for my game in my Native Language and/or English?
Yes, as long as you include one language that isn't your Native language you are welcome to provide translations.

I don't know how to say what I want to say in my target language. Can I use translation applications?
Try to avoid using translation applications. Websites like HiNative might have the answer to your questions. If not, you are welcome to post your questions in the community tab. Other jammers might be able to help you out.

Do I have to include the theme?
No, the theme is completely optional.

Can I submit my game/story to more than one jam?
Yes, the games/stories you submit to this jam can also be submitted to other game jams. However, please make sure you follow the rules of the jams you are submitting to.

I've never made a digital game before, do you have any suggested tools?
Here are some free beginner-friendly tools you can use to make your games:
Scratch, Twine, Bitsy. Other tools are also available.

I would like to submit a song/poem/zine etc. is that allowed?
Of course! As long as you made it during the jam period and it follows the rules of the jam any form of creative media is welcome.

Have any other questions not answered above? Post them in the community tab!
