Concept.

Plenty of indie games are highly inspired by retro games, particularly around the NES era, but whilst most leniently mimic the limitations of those consoles, what's often overlooked is the philosophy that went into those games in the first place, pushing the hardware to the limit.

The goal of this jam then, is to make a retro game that does just that. Make something that feels like it could belong on an old console or PC, but could really only exist with modern hardware. This means going beyond something as simple as parallax scrolling, think big, think impressive on a technical level, imagine how impressive something like the portal gun was for the first time or consider what can be done with significantly high object limits.

How can you "wow" people now in a way not possible before?

Rules.

  1. Game's must adhere to the core of the jam.
  2. The game should mostly be created within the time limit. Using existing assets is fine, using existing code or even existing prototypes is fine so long as most of the game was made within the jam.
  3. Teams are allowed.
  4. Game's should easy and clear to get running, ideally playable in browser.
  5. The game engine is your choice.
  6. Your submission must include screenshots from the game.
  7. You maintain complete ownership of anything you produce for this jam.
