What is Onchain Gaming?

Onchain gaming refers to video games that can interact with onchain technology, creating unique, decentralized experiences. However, it's important to note that the Onchain Game Jam is open to all kinds of games—whether they have onchain elements or not. You can create a traditional single-player game, a local multiplayer experience, or a fully onchain-integrated game. All types of games are welcome, and the key is creativity and fun.

In onchain games, elements like in-game items, characters, assets, and even entire game economies can be represented as digital tokens onchain. These tokens, often NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), are owned by the players, meaning they can be traded, sold, or transferred beyond the confines of a single game. This concept empowers players with real ownership and allows for value that extends across different platforms and games.

Flexible Distribution: Games created for this jam can be sold like any other game, but they can also be represented as NFTs on the Bario Entertainment System's onchain game store. Players who buy these NFTs will own access to the game, similar to owning a cartridge for a classic console game. When they're done, they can sell the NFT to someone else, giving them the same kind of ownership experience as in the old days of gaming.

Objective and Vision

We aim to bring together hundreds of indie game developers, most of whom may not be familiar with crypto or onchain possibilities, and introduce them to the benefits of building games that can integrate with decentralized ecosystems like Base. Structure

Theme: The Game Jam is open to all game types, but creativity and onchain potential are highly encouraged. Developers are free to make anything from RPGs to puzzle games, horror stories to arcade throwbacks. The only condition? Think about how your game could benefit from the features available—whether they’re onchain elements like $BARIO tokens, item ownership, or simply the joy of creating a unique experience.

Prize Pool: Bario Entertainment System is contributing $12,000 to the prize pool, with hopes of further expanding it through potential partnerships. The prize distribution is as follows:

First Place: 50% of the prize pool
Second Place: 30% of the prize pool
Third Place: 20% of the prize pool

Additionally, every game that meets the criteria will receive from $25 to $100. Yes, everyone who meets the criteria wins!

Opportunities for Developers: Winning games, along with notable entries, will be integrated directly into Bario Entertainment System’s platform, where developers can continue earning from the games they create. Moreover, every game that meets the criteria will be put up for sale on Bario Entertainment System. The game's creator sets the price, and 90% of the revenue goes to the creator, with a 10% platform commission going to Bario Entertainment System. This game jam isn’t just a contest—it’s a potential career gateway for developers who may not have explored decentralized technologies before. They’ll be exposed to new ways to earn income, new audiences, and new creative possibilities.

Game Criteria

We accept a wide range of game genres, including but not limited to platformers, beat 'em ups, shoot 'em ups, shooters, RPGs, visual novels, racing games, horror, adventure, strategy, simulation, puzzle, and more. Whether your game is 2D, 3D, pixel art, voxel-based, or even text-based, all are welcome. The only requirement is that it must be browser-playable to ensure accessibility for everyone.

The format doesn't matter—what matters is that your game is immersive and fun! Highly recommended are games that captivate players, keeping them engaged and entertained throughout.

A Vision for Growth

The Onchain Game Jam by Bario Entertainment System aims not only to reward creativity but also to build a network of talented game developers with a stake in the onchain world. By attracting at least 1,000 developers, each inspired to create unique, onchain-powered experiences, we aim to change how indie games are created, shared, and played.

With $BARIO integrated into these games, players and developers alike can experience how onchain tokens add value in the most playful, fun context—games! In doing so, we also create an expanded use-case for $BARIO, demonstrating how deeply integrated it can become in the gaming ecosystem and strengthening its position on Base.

Rules

No Early Work: You cannot work on your game before the jam starts. The majority of the code and assets must be created during the jam period.
Premade Assets: Premade assets, such as art, shaders, and music, are allowed as long as you have the right to use them.
Game Engines Allowed: You are allowed to use any game engine you prefer.
Teamwork Encouraged: Teams are allowed and encouraged! There is no limit to team size.
Browser Builds Only: All games must be built to run in a web browser. Mobile compatibility, especially accommodating different screen sizes, is highly encouraged and will be seen as a positive.
Ownership Rights: Anything you make during the Onchain Game Jam is your property. We claim no rights or ownership over your game.
Media Coverage: Any game submitted to the Onchain Game Jam may appear in material or media covering the event without your express permission.
Intellectual Property: You must own the intellectual property of your game. Fan games are not allowed.
Genre Mashing: Genre mashing is allowed and encouraged!
Prize Payouts: Cash prizes will be distributed through an Ethereum wallet, in Base ETH. You must have an Ethereum wallet. If you do not have one, we will assist you in setting one up.
Judges' Entries: Games made or significantly contributed to by judges are not eligible for prizes. If a judge's game ranks within the top entries, it will be excluded from prize considerations, and the next eligible game will take its place.
Multiple Submissions: You may submit as many games as you like. If a game meets the eligibility criteria, it will be considered.
Mature Themes: Games with mature themes are allowed, but explicit sexual content is not permitted.
Right to Disqualify: Hosts and moderators reserve the right to disqualify any participants acting maliciously, using discretion and common sense to apply rulings on a case-by-case basis.
