Wonderfall is a solo hexcrawl which requires minimal materials and setup to play.
The generation of quests based on tables of thematic prompts allow a lot of flexibility in how a game may proceed. Some of the terms were difficult to consider when creating events, but once you have a better idea of each value this game really allows you to flex your creative muscles. For example I had difficulty at first when rolling the problem types and understanding how accessibility and availability differed. It took minimal consideration and then I was back in the game.
The first few quests in the game may take a lot of flipping through the pamphlet as you familiarize yourself with the system, but the great layout makes it easy. The resolution of encounters is dice based with additional dice being rolled based on relevant stats and character perks. It feels fulfilling in that your character choices make a direct difference and you find yourself approaching problems in a way that is natural for your character. The failure mechanic of "consequences" requires various outcomes, but always requires use of a different approach which keeps the game from feeling stale or from trying the same thing over and over again. The game is a single page printed pamphlet with pleasing colors and great placement to maximize the space while ensuring everything still has plenty room to breathe. The art assets add to the cute vibe of the overall game. A tremendous amount of character and setting is brought through with minimal writing.
Overall the game has minimal adjustment time as you learn the pacing of the system but Catscratch Studios has created a game which provides a great setting for players to jump in and explore with minimal prep or resources from the player. It's perfect for a night when you want a cozy adventure but don't want to get a whole group together for it. Excellent game! I highly recommend.
