  • The themes are in the game artistically and in terms of gameplay, however dying to unknown causes and not getting to craft things within the time spent trying the game it doesnt feel very enticing to play. The ideas of the game are promising and show thought, and the art is very nice and fits the theme of shadow.
  • The art style is really incredible and unique, and incorporates the shadow part of the theme well. I felt incredibly immersed. The music was also very consistent with the aesthetic of the game, and that enhanced the whole experience. Movement also felt really nice and fluid. It was occasionally hard to determine what dark objects were surfaces and what were just background elements, but that only occured in a few places. I did have a hard time figuring out what I was supposed to do, and this might be improved by adding more on-screen tips for controls at the beginning of the game or perhaps more visual cues, at least early on, to provide additional directional guidance. The light beam for moving from one scene to the other was really helpful!

Tell us about your game!
Entry for Pirate Software Game Jam July 2024. Theme: Shadows and Alchemy. I chose to focus on this game by not reinventing the wheel, but with things that I'm challenged with personally like level design, overall world-feel, and interesting mechanics. I hope you enjoy.

Pay your Penance.
You must grow mushrooms and create elixirs to pay your daily Penance to the elder Octopus.

Controls
Keyboard

- Movement - WASD

- Spacebar - Jump/Interaction

Mouse

- Inventory interactions

The player enters a mysterious world where they have to find out their daily Penance. To fulfill the Penance they must both grow mushrooms in their planters, and concoct elixirs at the mixing station with the required ingredients.

The player will embark on either finding mushrooms and elixirs scattered throughout the world. Destroying enemies will also give drops the player might need. There is a mixing station to create Penance required elixirs and a planter station where the player can grow more mushrooms. The player will then fill the Penance container with the required items and after the player walks away, they will be accepted if they are the correct items.

Extra Notes
Thank you for the opportunity! Good luck, and have fun.

My penance was unpaid.

Art style of this game is fantastic. The transitions between things you enter is very smooth and feels very clean and polished.

Movement feels very fluid, and the farming system is a nice touch, rather than just making players collect items.

Awesome submission!
