According to the World Health Organization, about 15% of the world's population has some kind of impairment which may restrict access to games. During this Game Jam, we aim to raise awareness by making video game concepts and prototypes, which are especially accessible in consideration of a range of physical and mental disabilities.

At the PlayBern Festival for Games and Creativity we are announcing the “Utopian” theme this year. New indie games will be conceptualized, designed, published and played at the Reitschule cultural center in the Swiss capital, as well as on itch.io - a global platform for independent game developers. We will provide a working environment, drinks, snacks, design materials, and game interfaces for you to experiment with. It will also be possible to join the kick-off, checkpoints and presentations virtually, and to submit your entry online.

Details

The Game Jam will begin at the Kick-off of the Festival. There will be two livestreams during the Checkpoints, and we can help to form teams and answer questions anytime on Discord or the Game Jam Forum. Please develop your games using newly created or openly licensed, and properly attributed, content. At the finish of the Game Jam, the Presentations will take place on site and also livestreamed (please let us know if you would like to present over a videoconference).

Programming skills are not required - creative ideas will be implemented in teams, supported by experienced game designers, and game makers are allowed. Participation is free of charge, thanks to our sponsors. Tables, chairs and WiFi connectivity will be provided at the Festival. We will ensure on-site support at Checkpoint Beta and in the morning of the final day.

Anyone can take part in the Game Jam, both on location and online submissions are accepted on itch.io/jam/playbern and showcased equally. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by adults. Please register on MeetUp if you would like to join us on location in Bern, Switzerland. Connect to us virtually over our Community forum  or using Discord chat.
