I did not expect a long, slow paced, Kurosawa style intro cutscene to a jam game but I'm extremely here for it! What I love to see most in the games I've played from Soul Engine is the incredible direction and pacing and music and intentionality. It's apparent Soul Engine has big plans for how they want folks to feel. Can't wait to play more.
That intro was pretty epic haha, however, could have probably been paced slightly faster. Was it all made with unity? The gameplay and sprites were also pretty cool. I think that adding a windup animation for the enemy attacks would be good and it was also not clear what was going to be in front of you if you needed to dodge stuff.
The opening cutscene is very impressive. All of the art and sound is fantastic. This was obviously lovingly hand-crafted.
With that being said, I really don't want to watch a long unskippable cutscene when I play a game jam game, especially when the actual gameplay only lasts about 30 seconds. A "press/hold to skip" prompt would go a long way toward making me want to play this more than once.
While it feels a little unfinished gameplay-wise, I think the art, music, and sound design of JOON is something really special. Soul Engine definitely has a great sense of ambiance and substance, and I can easily see them nailing one of the next great indie games sooner than later. Keep an eye on them or you're gonna have serious FOMO!
Really neat looking and sounding game, although the intro scene takes much longer than playing the game itself
We got a little ambitious with the intro cutscene haha but thank you for playing!
