Prepare yourself! The Respawn Spring 2024 game jam is upon us! Develop a game in a weekend with a team of fellow students and then share your creation! A game jam theme will be chosen at the start of the event which you can get inspiration from (or don't, the choice is yours).

The theme is:

HOOKED ON

Rules for Participation

  1. Act Appropriately: You must abide by Florida Polytechnic University’s student code of conduct to ensure appropriate event behavior.
  2. Don't Plagiarize: Make sure to credit content used in your project that wasn't created by you or any team members.
  3. New Projects Only: You should be creating a brand new project for the game jam rather than building on top of an already existing project. You are allowed to reference assets from previous project such as code snippets or generic content. You should feel like you are developing something new ultimately so use your best judgement on this one
    1. If you have a game idea prior to the game jam that you never built upon, you are allowed to utilize that design.
  4. Team sizes shouldn't exceed 4 people.
    1. This is only a maximum team size, feel free to work in a team smaller than this or even solo.

Event Q&A

  • Where can I find teammates?
    • If you join our discord we will have a channel for finding teammates as well as general discussion about the game jam. We recommend finding teammates ahead of the game jam.
    • During the meeting where we give out the theme there will be a final chance to find a team or team members.
  • Will the game jam be remote or in person?
    • This jam will start IN PERSON. The Kickoff meeting will be hosted in room IST 1045 on 2/22/2024 at 7:00PM.
    • This jam will end IN PERSON. The Conclusion meeting will be hosted in room IST 1002 and IST 1003 on 2/25/2024 at 7:00PM.
    • On Saturday of the Jam, you can work on your project in the SIM Lab from 11AM to 7PM!
  •  I have never developed a game in my life! Where do I get started?
    • There are many ways to begin your game development journey, but surprisingly, game jams are often the best places to start! Jumping into the deep end with a time crunch forces you to at least make some progress on a game and even if you don't make a finished product, the progress you will make will carry into other projects and jams you take part in. If you are looking to learn a game engine, some of the easier ones to learn are Godot and Unity. There are many resources online to help learn these and if you need more help, don't be afraid to reach out to club members and officers.
  • What game engine am I allowed to use to create my game?
    • There is no limitation on what game engines or software you can utilize during the game jam.
    • We recommend sticking to the popular options such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Gamemaker, Pico-8, Godot,  p5.js, or monogame.
  • My question isn't listed here. How can I get help?
    • You can message any of the executive board members on our discord channel. As a last resort email ctaylor3707@floridapoly.edu
