In this jam, you are challenged to create a game taking place during a road trip! This is a casual, low-stress jam, taking place from January 23rd 12:00 PM to April 23rd,  11:59 PM, GMT-3.

There are no rankings or prizes, it's just for fun. We only ask that participants check out other submissions to support our fellow devs! โค๏ธ

RULES:

- Your game must take place during a road trip for the grand majority of its runtime. That's the main rule. You can do flashbacks or have moments before/after the trip itself, but most of the game must take place during the trip.

This also means your game must involve a vehicle of some kind.

- Games of any size and complexity, created in any engine (as long as it allows publishing on itchio), are welcome. This includes tabletop/analog games!

- Your game must be new. Previously released games won't be accepted.

- Any genre is welcome. Wanna make a spooky zombie action game taking place in a high-stakes post-apocalyptic road trip? Or a cozy driving simulator across modern Canada? Use your creativity!

- You can start developing the game before the jam begins; this includes (but is not limited to) asset creation, writing, team-building, coding, and setting up the game proper. Utilizing old ideas or reviving an old, abandoned sketch or draft is also allowed.

- Working on teams or as a solo dev is okay, just remember that the jam is supposed to be low-stress. Try to keep track of your game's scope.

โ€“ Demos, vertical slices, etc are okay. If you can't finish the game on time and want to update it after the jam ends, that's alright too.

- Assets utilized in your submission must be either a) original creations or b) assets that you collected and are allowed to use (from asset packs, creative commons, etc). No AI-generated content is allowed in your entries.

- We will not accept submissions promoting bigotry or discrimination of ANY sort (homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, etc) - including imagery such as hate symbols.

- Games featuring Lolicon/shotacon and/or incest are not permitted to be submitted.

- NSFW entries are allowed as long as they're properly tagged with appropriate content warnings and involve characters aged 18 or older only.

- Unfinished/multi part releases are allowed, and so are spin-offs. If you'd like to make a spin-off game about your characters from other projects goofing off in a road trip, you're very invited to submit it!

Examples of media set during a road trip for inspiration:

The Oregon Trail - a historical, educational strategy video game, where you must survive the route from Missouri to Oregon. It has a focus on resource management and survival.

Final Fantasy XV take place during a road trip. The characters drive from place to place, stop at hotels, go camping, bond, and discover new places and sights - all the while fighting monsters in a fantasy setting.

The Brooklyn 99 episode '99' is about a found family cast of characters going on a cross-country road trip, stuck together inside a broken down trailer and eating questionable road food. Now that's what I call a real road trip.

If you're unsure whether your project fits the theme, would like to find people to recruit, or just want to share your progress, post a thread on our community section!

We suggest the DevTalk server for finding folks to work with if you're making a visual novel. The server is not for this jam and the admins there will not be able to answer your questions.

You are welcome to use the jam's logos and branding, made by Nevi, for your project page and the game itself. She made a regular one and a 'rusted' one for your spookier projects.

Q: Can my engine be Roblox?

A: No, as Roblox does not allow publishing on itchio. We allow most engines, except those that don't support posting the game on itchio.

Q: Can my game take place on a train? Or a boat? How about a bus? Can it just be a trip on foot?

A: No, as trains offer significantly different experiences than of a road trip with a vehicle - things like stopping for roadside food, gas stations, troubles on the road, and other experiences. Same goes for boats.

Your game can, however, take place in a vehicle that is akin to a car. A game about a road trip in an alien planet, for example, could have its vehicle be an UFO. 'Fantasy' or historical vehicles are allowed, just make sure it depicts the common experiences of a road trip.

A bus is okay, but make it an actual road trip instead of a regular long bus drive. On foot is really pushing the concept - please have a vehicle of some kind involved.

Q: Can I participate with more than one team/game?

A: Yes, but remember that this jam is meant to be chill and no-crunch. Keep track of how much work you're giving yourself and your team.

Q: Will there be another road trip jam?

A: Possibly, depending on how this one goes and the availability of the hosts,  we could have another one at the same time of the year in 2026.

We will be retweeting posts made in the #RoadTripJam2025 Twitter/Bluesky hashtags.

Share your games and your progress there! ๐Ÿ’
