What is this?

Welcome to screamless jam 2023, a light and breezy game jam designed to accomodate as many game developers as possible while we close out the year. Developers of any skill level are welcomed, and anyone can join using any game engine.

Is there a theme?

The optional theme for this jam is FLASHBACK. You don't have to use it, but perhaps it will help inspire you.

What is a "submission period" and what are the rules?

This game jam has a significantly different rule set compared to most jams (including our own SCREAM JAM series), so please read these rules carefully.

All game jams on itch.io have two periods: the "submission period" and the "voting period".

Submission Period

The submission period begins once the jam starts. This jam's submission period lasts for 21 days. In most game jams, developers must create a game from scratch. For this game jam, you can either create a new game or may instead choose to enhance or finish a previously started game project.

NOTE: To submit to this jam, your game must be free. You must also have uploaded a build to your game page during the submission period. These rules are to prevent spammers from submitting their games.

Voting Period

The voting period lasts from the end of the submission period to the game jam's end date. This jam's voting period lasts for 11 days. In most game jams, developers are not allowed to update their game's builds during the voting period. For this game jam, you may update your game's builds during the voting period as long as your game remains fundamentally the same.

There will also be no voting in this jam. Instead, we will add a link to a form on this page once the voting period begins. Using that form, you can advocate for games to the hosts. Ultimately, the hosts will pick a handful of games to showcase. The reason for this process is to keep the jam light-hearted - we don't unnecessarily have to have someone come last place.

Can I make a game about <insert thing here>?

Probably! In general, we will accept most games as long as sensitive content is properly flagged on the game's page. This is a light-hearted jam - violent content will be allowed but we will be stricter about ensuring your game is properly flagged.

The world is in conflict and some may treat this game jam as a form of escapism. As such, games about active wars of any kind are not allowed. 

We reserve the right to remove any games from our jam for any reason, but we are primarily concerned with hateful content. If you are concerned about your game idea's suitability for this jam, please contact one of the Support staff on Discord.

Can I use pre-made assets?

Of course! As long as they're properly attributed.

Can I use AI to generate assets?

Probably not.

For this jam, you may only use AI models which have been trained on properly-licensed training material such as Adobe Firefly. We will strictly enforce this rule - if you use an applicable AI model, please list it on your game's page.

We are still figuring out our policy for AI-generated assets, and this may change in future jams.
