- Contestant: Harvey Foster / @harveyfos. Assessor: Tristan McGuire / @draconic_cowboy. Tier: SFAS. Congrats on completing your project! Things that went well: ✧ Great evidence of concept iteration. It’s always a bonus when 3D artists have 2D capabilities too. ✧ Topology is on point. Nice use of patches. ✧ Solid effort put into the UVs. ✧ Great to see rigging skills! This goes above and beyond the responsibilities of a character artist, but is a very handy skill. ✧ Lighting works well in reflecting the theme. Things to consider next time: ✧ The high poly sculpt would benefit from more contrast between sharp and soft edges. You have a lot of smooth flowing forms - next time think about where you can add a nice crisp edge such as the edges of the fabric. ✧ A small improvement to the topology would be to make sure edge loops line up on pisces that overlap such as the front piece of fabric overlapping the skirt. ✧ To take the UVs to the next level, look into straightening the edges of fabric pieces so you optimise the use of the space more. And try unwrapping hands so that the fingers are parallel rather than splayed out. You could also split the staff into multiple sections so that you could use more of the UV space, or use a rectangular texture if there aren’t enough shells to fill a square one. ✧ The use of images in your documentation is excellent, but it would have been very beneficial to have more words to explain your choices. You would have gotten higher scores if the documentation had accompanying text. I hope this feedback proves useful and will help you with future projects and building your portfolio.
