- Student: Nathan Paterson Challenge Tier: Rising Star Assessor: Jessie Chan Hi Nathan! Lovely work on your first character! I get the feeling of calmness and solitude that you were aiming for, here are some comments I had: 🌸 You’ve got a great hold on the sculpting process already, keep working to improve this and get more detail in there. Some of your plane changes are a little non-committal, be more confident with your brushstrokes and your model will thank you for it! 🌸 Your final model loses some of the detail you’ve done in the sculpt because you didn’t go through the baking process. This is a whole stage of the pipeline in itself, and there are plenty of tutorials online to go into it better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYtHp4IXvsM Essentially, you can keep all the details you sculpted in your high-poly model onto a retopologised model! 🌸Although on the point above, handpainted only characters do exist too, but in final rendering only the base colour will be driving everything. This includes lighting and shadow! 🌸 Retopology is a tough step, you’ve done well! For your next character, aim to have the key edge flows for deformation around the face, arms, fingers and legs. DannyMac3D and 3DMutiny on YouTube have some great tutorials on this. Also, remember to “relax” your quads to ensure they are evenly distributed across the model’s surface. Looking forward to what you create next Nathan, best of luck! Please reach out if you have any questions :)
- Well done on completing this project, you had some great results especially considering it's your first character model. You have some really good concept art development and consideration for the challenge theme. It looks like you took your time on this model and enjoyed the project. Some feedback: ∘ try to study the muscle groups a bit closer, i find this ecorche 3d viewer tool to be quite useful https://ecorche.anatomy4sculptors.com/figure-and-torso/torso-anatomy/male-ecorche ∘ you did a great job retopologising! the mesh has nice consistent density throughout and good use of edge loop reduction flows, however we tend not to use these on faces as it breaks edge flows and can impact animation and posing. ∘ I like the human-like approach you took with this project, it would have been beneficial to do some further research on classical stone statues, both real photos and 3d art for reference. try to replicate stone material a bit closer by adding layers of colour variations and cracks ∘ I like the detail of adding some caustics to make it look underwater. this could also be achieved using VFX in UE5, paired with some blue tinted post-processing would look great. Overall great job on this project, it was completed to a very good standard and showed considered use of industry workflows. I see great potential in your work! Really nice texturing work on this piece! It’s lovely and really fits with the style of sculpt you went for. Good luck!
Thank you! Good luck to yours too, love it :)
